Grrr, my husband and I were supposed to get our Covid and flu shots this weekend. I sure hope it's not Covid. I don't feel that badly. Yet. Keeping my fingers crossed. Right now my throat hurts and I feel drained. Other than that I'm fine. Thanks so much Linda. I really appreciate it.

#5amwritersclub - Good morning, everyone. I now know why I've been dragging over the past few days. I'm full bore sick. Throat hurts and I feel drained. Going to rest this weekend and finish the Living Dead interview next week.

Otherwise, IT'S FRIDAY!!!! Yay!

I think I need to leave and go to bed. Sorry I'll miss the end of the chat. I'm falling asleep as I type. LOL Good night, everyone! See you on BlueSky.

Well, I was originally going to have her eat the baby - she has pica after all - but that's predictable. 😄 Now to figure out what (or who) she eats in the end and then I can work my way backwards. She even ate the cat's laser pointer. Pissed off the cat. LOL

I can relate! I also end up rewriting endings over and over again. I want them to end in a bang not a whimper. I like the story to feel resolved.

Her name is Melanie Picket. She just gave birth and she has postpartum depression. She also pretty much eats paint chips. She has a scorching case of pica. She wants her in-laws and husband to see her. She's invisible except as a mom and wife. I don't know how she reacts yet.

Q5: Tell us about your main character. Who are they? What do they want? #WeeknightWriters

I agree - expression is vitally important. It's how we communicate. I choose words in such a way that I don't have to write anything other than "she said" after dialogue. No descriptions or adverbs. I LOVE writing dialogue. Maybe it's my theater background. Combine expression and tone and I'm happy.

#WeeknightWriters

How my MCs resolve their problems and issues. This usually happens at or close to the end of a story. I have a hell of a time ending my stories. They peter out. I can write a mean hook but endings? Meh.

As soon as I read that quip I could see the guy. And I could tell he had a gruff voice. LOL
trishcwilson.bsky.social
It's great fun, isn't it? I must know how my characters think and speak before I can get to know them.
trishcwilson.bsky.social
For me, my characters have to have an authentic & eccentric voice. I love to hear how they think & the words they use. I think it was in an Elmore Leonard book where he described a large man carrying a sack of stolen goods "the rebuttal to Santa Claus". Brilliant! I wish I could write like that!

Voice. I love figuring out how my characters express themselves esp. when thinking and speaking. The more eccentric the better. Four writers I like who are good at that sort of thing are Stephen King, Janet Evanovich, Joe Lansdale, and Elmore Leonard.

Q3: What aspects of character development do you enjoy most? What goes into making a character? #WeeknightWriters
Notepad that says “#WeeknightWriters What aspects of character development do you enjoy most?"
trishcwilson.bsky.social
#WeeknightWriters

That's a tough one. So many of the aspects are interconnected or contradictory. I need an aspect that drives the character forward so I'd have to say whatever is motivating the character is of primary importance to me.

Q2: What aspects of character development do you consider most important to your story planning process? #WeeknightWriters
Notepad that says “#WeeknightWriters What aspects of character development do you consider most important to your story planning process?"

I do a combination of both. I'll get the skeleton of a story idea, and then I see whose experience in that situation is the most interesting and exciting. That person most often becomes my main character. Then, I match the story to the characters.

Q1: Do you typically create characters to match the story you want to tell or build your stories based on character(s) already living in your head? #WeeknightWriters

Yup. It's annoying. Once I come up with a good ending, I'll have to rewrite the beginning. Hmmm.... maybe I'll start at the ending and work my way backwards. I've heard of writers doing that. #WeeknightWriters

Been attempting to record for a Proof Heraldic teaser. However, I've been struggling with fainting and chronic pain today. I did get the intro and a bit of writing for another story done but damn it's tough to keep going rn.

hellooooooo I'm E (she/they) and we'll pretend I'm already working on MarthaWIP, my (?) fantasy about a grumpy old lesbian and her eldritch ex, in the hopes that pretending I'm working on it will calm my brain down

( #FirstDraftFall planning is done)

Howdy, #WeeknightWriters. I’m Jeff and I’m working on a queer YA version of the Persephone/Demeter/Hades story, with a twist. How’s the planning going, you ask? Well, I have a concept of a plan….

I'm Trish Wilson. My WIP is untitled for now. It's horror & I'm stuck. May rework the entire premise. I think I've painted myself into a corner. Every ending I've come up with is predictable and a cliche. I'll keep the MC and her issues, though.

Thanks, G! I was feeling better this morning, but I'm drained again now. Need a bit more time. No relapses!
