This. Absolutely this.
"While much has been written about the vulnerabilities of contingent faculty, there has been almost no discussion of the academic freedom needs of one of higher education’s most rapidly growing workforces: third-space professionals." #HigherEd #Staff #AcademicLibraries

We got lots of fun Treat Monster name suggestions! Forgot how much fun library outreach can be.
A large piece of paper with “What should we name our treat monsters?” at the top and many names, some silly, some normal, in children’s handwriting. Three monsters are at the bottom.

“There is no place in American higher education for death threats against professors,” Todd Wolfson, the president of the AAUP, said in a statement. “We stand with Professor Bray against this gross assault on academic freedom and freedom of speech.”

One thing I hope AAUP does to expand coverage of these issues is relate the loss of governance, loss of academic freedom, loss of tenure and other things that SEEM to affect only faculty more in terms of how it affects education, tuition cost, and accessibility.

Debuting treat monsters and polling for names at a library outreach event this afternoon. HOW CUTE ARE THEY?!
Three monster shaped candy baskets on a glass display case in a library. The one on the left is pink with one eye and horns, the one in the middle is blue with two eye stalks, and the one on the right is yellow-green with two eye stalks. All three have open mouths where the candy goes.

It's clearer by the day that Columbia making a deal with Trump in July was a catastrophe for higher education as a whole. It gave terrible people a bottomless appetite for extortion. The other eight universities must follow MIT's lead.

Or anything, really. Passing your grading off to AI is simply deciding that your students’ work isn’t worth engaging with. And if that’s how you feel, why on Earth are you in a classroom?

I strongly urge everyone to not just read this warning from @marcwatkins.bsky.social, but heed it, and be vocal and forceful pushing back against using AI to grade student writing. This must be anathema if we're going to have a world where learning means something. substack.com/inbox/post/1...
