this was my old pinned post on Twitter, Fran Lebowitz is one of the best to ever do it, just the clearest and most powerful articulation of my beliefs about the arts and their relationship with criticism i've ever seen from another person

it's because boomers fantasized about there being no consequences for going off on their boss or or wife w/e, while the millennial fantasy is basically your shitty parents apologizing to you. it'll be interesting to see what gen z does once they're at the proverbial wheel

i mean it's a competitive field for sure but with engineers i usually assume they know at least ONE real thing and that isn't at all true of the two groups i just mentioned

There's also this whole cross-Fromsoftian thing with survival strategies and the inverse relationship between an organism's complexity and how many offspring it produces, which by reputation is *most* prominent in Bloodborne and of course I can't access that part of the Rosetta Stone lol.

the Silver Tears as an effort to create a Lord by creating an infinitely malleable creature, and Marika's ancestry making her uniquely suited to "harmonious" merging with the flesh of others.

It's also kind of interesting how susceptible dragons are to various forms of energy (especially lesser dragons, who look more like animal chimeras vs. the alien, stone-and-lightning, barely-biological look of ancient dragons), the Eternal Cities' effort to imitate draconic immortality,
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
(On the other hand, ancient dragons are tinged with gold. Although now that I think of it this describes ancient dragons *after they allied themselves with Marika's dynasty* -- I should check and see if Placi himself has the shimmering hints of gold beneath his stone skin like the others do or not.)

(I lean towards Metyr because the pairing of Placidusax, a five-headed dragon whose gift of intelligence to lesser beasts is represented by a hand, and Metyr as the Mother of Fingers, both of whom are now crippled and incomplete, is just a little too perfectly symmetrical.)
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
(We have some pretty solid hints about the how/why, at least: Placidusax was mutually crippled by Bayle, and his God "fled." I've never really come up with a personally satisfying answer to whether the God in question was Metyr or the Elden Beast but it almost has to be one of the two.)

We're getting way outside the realm of anything I could prove but I think the animal-gods must belong to an era immediately after the dragons somehow lost power and authority and their not-quite-yet-human servants took over; the Demigods of an earlier Age.
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
Beastmen -- the lowly servants of dragons -- are described as becoming more human, more "civilized", so fast that they could see it happening and were discomforted by the way their animal nature gave way to something else. And we know that Placidusax was Elden Lord before any human was.

The animal totem stuff makes more sense when you think about how this stuff got down to the level of mortals in the first place, though. This isn't a setting where evolution occurred on geological time scales, the gods are directly fucking around and reshaping this world.
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
There is a unifying principle -- there's a REALLY clear pattern of animal totems. Serpent, Insect, Lion, Bird, Wolf, Moose. It's tricky because there's *also* an astrological element to it where you have solar, lunar, and stellar forces and they're probably just two taxonomies for the same things.

Rather, just as Marika's empire has its factions and contenders, we're looking at the scattered survivors of an entire world-system that was swept away.
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
Generally speaking, the common element in all of these is that they're somehow related or adjacent to Death. Rot, rebirth, fire, and so on. There are tenuous links between the Church of the Bud, Verdigris, the Fire Giants, the Pests, etc. but I don't think they're actually *the same*.
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
There are a lot of little bits and fragments in the game that suggest Marika *broke* some older system when she established the Golden Order. The Deathbird / Twinbird, the Ancestral Spirits, the Scarlet Rot itself, the entire concept of "divine elements" that comes up in places.
tuxedocatfish.bsky.social
okay where was i. ancestral followers. they worship big spooky moose that have plant- or fungus-like growths coming out of their bodies, which are explicitly described as "buds"

there are also incongruous Ancestral Followers scattered around the world map, mostly strangely of all IN the Lake of Rot
