Periodically re-upping this b/c alas, things ain't great overall. Acute needs are all met, and I hate passing around the hat for myself, but I'd rather be like "hey, if I could fund another month while I still have savings and budget, that's MUCH more comfortable" than panic, y'know?

I completely agree about the intent. No argument there. I'm talking about what actually made it onto the cartridge. There's an entire solo game, a peripheral mechanic to trade for a few optional bonuses, and PvP that's siloed off from the rest of the game. That's what actually got made (originally).

Anyway, PvP and trading *became* central over time, after starting as side gimmicks (at least in the realized games, whatever any designer's intent may have been).

Pokemon originated in a traditionally single-player genre and shoehorned in the trades and PvP as a way to push their latest Nintendo Gimmick Hardware (the game link cable)

I’ve never really understood why pokemon fans get super super against trade evolutions. Like. I think items or workarounds like romhacks do are awesome! But the series is fundamentally a social game. You get help with stuff you can’t get that is just rare and everyone can get it. Idk

Personally I think there's significance in the fact that Mr. Rogers doesn't try to claim that his drawing is just as good as anyone else's, and instead he's honest that it's *not* a good drawing, and affirms that it's worth doing anyway. I think that's important.

The famous Mr. Rogers is drawing a simplistic house in red crayon. He says, "Do you like to draw with crayons? I'm not very good at it. But it doesn't matter. It's the fun of doing it that's important."

Big same. I've been saying for ages that Pokemon drifted from its old-school RPG roots without the intentionality of choosing anything else to be instead. PLZA could be a real breakthrough. Splitting off traditional PvP battles into Champions is huge too.
