Today we pay a visit to Freya Stark, the woman who made travel writing intimate rather than imperial.
“To awaken quite alone in a strange town,” she wrote, “is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.”

A tenet of Fascism is keep repeating lies and people will become so confused about what is the truth that they’ll start to believe them. We all have a responsibility to keep repeating the truth in the face of politically-motivated lying. Don’t just roll your eyes, speak up.

A lot of people dismiss those whose beliefs are rooted in misinformation as uneducated. As Uyi Omoregie and I discovered researching our book, Misinformation Matters, even a PhD is no protection against conspiracy theories: you're convinced your intellect makes you better able to see what is 'true'

"Addressing real psychological & sociological needs is something those false, misinformed beliefs are doing. We actually need to try to tackle the underlying social problems, like alienation, people are grappling with"

From Covid to climate change, understanding the role unevidenced conspiracy theories fulfil for individual and social identity in a shifting world can better help explain our ‘post-truth’ age

Jo, have you met the amazing surgeon Dr @liangrhea.bsky.social ? I think you'd have much to chat about. Not only is she a kickass surgeon she's also a tiny petite ballerina sized person who educates on gender in medicine.

Solnit - « Behind these stories [blaming sexual assault victims, blaming Ukraine for Russia’s invasion, blaming liberals for the misdeeds of the Trump regime] is the assumption that some people matter more than other people, and that we who matter less have to pander to those who matter more. »
