Finding out that the people in charge are often petulant hypocrites is one of the most valuable things you can learn in college and will undoubtedly make these student journalists even better at their jobs.

“Like King, many ostensibly ‘nonviolent’ civil rights activists embraced their constitutional right to self-protection—yet this crucial dimension of the Afro-American freedom struggle has been long ignored by history.”

the most unsurprising thing in the world is now every rightwinger, all yhe way up to JD vance, have explicitely defended this and the statements made by those in this group. and that’s by design, every single rightwinger is now an extremist nazi

And if I do have an idea for a story or a joke or something that I think is superlative, I can work to make it myself.

Why would I want a machine to get in the way and adulterate something I already think is brilliant?

If I really want to make something exactly as I envision it, AI can't help me.

This is a great factcheck on the DHS sizzle videos of them rounding up immigrants: they are leaving a lot of context out.

here’s more context to the videos DHS is putting out from Chicago.

I’m only thinking about this article in the content of SCOTUS rehearing the Voting Rights Act case. This is what Republicans say in private. Republicans who are elected. Republicans who serve within their party apparatus. Republicans who work for the Trump administration & work in state government.

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.

Even just for entertainment; I expect that a comedian will tell a funnier joke than I could write, that action filmmakers can stage set-pieces that I couldn't imagine, that game-makers can design and program interactions I could not articulate.

They can just do it better! That's why I watch/play!

As an audience member, I don't gain anything from typing a prompt into a plagiarism machine and getting an approximation of what I want.

The point of consuming art is that it lets you experience other people's lives and experiences, and opens up new ways of interpreting our shared human condition.
waldville.bsky.social
Regardless of whether or not AI can do this (it can't), what I find disturbing is how many people want this. Calling it masturbatory is an insult to masturbation.

I don't want art on demand. I want TV and movies that are the result of writers', directors', actors', etc. perspective and effort.

Hey look, Israel broke the cease-fire, twice, in two different ways, within 24 hours - again.

NEW: Israel informed the UN it will permit only 300 aid trucks into Gaza daily, not the 600 mandated by the ceasefire it just signed.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

Hey @meng.house.gov @schumer.senate.gov @kirstengillibrand.bsky.social,

While the government's shut down, what are you doing about all the fascism? And how do you plan to fortify the country against Trump's authoritarianism if the government re-opens and Democrats get back into power?

One thing AI boosters love to say is that we need it to solve problems like climate change. This just isn't true.

We already know how to solve climate change. We already have the technology.

Unless AI is gonna get rid of a few specific people, it can't come up with solutions we don't already have.

People who think they are good at using LLM's are little different than people who think they are good at driving while drunk, except that in the former case almost half the US economy is tied up in a cargo cult of telling them they are right.

All of the Israelis held by Hamas are called “hostages,” including the IDF soliders.

All the Palestinians released, though, are “prisoners,” including the many victims of Israel’s widespread arbitrary detention - meaning they are legally innocent, detained without charge or conviction.

Disgusting.
CBC headline reads: All living Israeli hostages freed, nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners released

one thing LLMs have revealed is that the belief that there is a magical incantation that will give you what you want is not just confined to pick-up artists and freemen on the land

Seeing people nonchalantly post stuff like makes me feel like I'm going crazy honestly.
A post from an academic on blue sky that says: "I'm learning about "prompt engineering" when asking LLMs to extract data. I now add this to all instructions:

Be concise, analytic, and specific (cite page/figure if provided). If essential info is missing, keep going but flag Unclear and exact data needed. Never invent data.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.
