As a scholar of white supremacy & Black liberation movements, it's important to me to recall my own family's history supporting slavery & Jim Crow as I do this work. I wrote this piece a few years ago to help me think through how this past both facilitates & informs my research today.
White Americans Fail to Address Their Family Histories
There is a conversation about race that white families are just not having. This is mine.

I know it’s wishful thinking at this point, but it would be really great for democracy & our collective safety if media orgs were just a wee little bit clearer abt this eliminationist rhetoric & its historical impact.

The Congressional GOP rhetoric labeling the No Kings protest as “terrorist” & participants as “rabid” is a pretty clear attempt to encourage & justify violence against an event that hasn’t even happened yet.
politico.com
Johnson slams the No Kings protest march scheduled to take place in DC next week as the “hate America rally” that would draw “the pro-Hamas wing” and “the antifa people.”
Johnson describes planned No Kings rally as ‘hate America,’ ‘pro-Hamas’ gathering
Organizers largely blew off the rhetoric, but some Democrats online criticized the tone.

I also teach Wilmington the week before with its convergence of Jim Crow national policies & violence w a new form of imperialism in 1898. I think that helps them identify those patterns in 1919. But it can still be tough for some to see past the rote triumphalist rhetoric of liberalism.

It’s difficult to really convey what happened & the extent of state culpability, but I’ve had most success having students examine primary docs to set up a synthesis of what I know they’ll find. I also have them read Carol Anderson’s White Rage, which draws out these themes over a longer span.

What an unfortunate coincidence that I’m talking about this and the Wilmington Coup of 1898 on Monday in my Violent Crime class…

I’m teaching abt Red Summer today, when white vigilantes & National Guardsmen across the country harassed, detained, assaulted, & murdered Black Americans as part of a backlash against Black military service in WWI.

It does a good job of illustrating the pervasive violence & plunder of Jim Crow, & I’ve used it in my Racial State in Film class, but the white savior storyline is pretty wildly exceptional.

That’s amazing! It’s such an incredible resource & I’m so grateful you put it together!

This is also a good illustration of why, when we talk abt US westward expansion (itself a colonial process), we also need to be talking abt empire.

Doomscrolling break!
I imagine every historian has a list of Most Neglected Aspect of History. I welcome them in the replies. Here's a thread on my candidate:

The California steamship lines from 1849–1869, during the gold rush until the first transcontinental railroad's completion.

If you've never encountered the details of these events in 1919 and are wondering how bad it could possibly be: its absolutely fucking awful. Genuinely, horrendous.

We’ll also be discussing Lucy Parsons’s classic “Americans! Arouse Yourselves!” in which she argues that voting alone will only reinforce these systems of violence & subjugation. Given the actual events of Red Summer, her assessment is difficult to dismiss.

1919: a summer of race massacres across U.S. amid a pandemic. Don’t turn your head away from real history.

Know your state’s and the nation’s brutal heritage of using white terrorism to block Black progress.

I know there are many people, especially in the UK and EU, who don't know how the US rewarded Black veterans. They fought, risks their lives...and Black people got this as a reward.

You weren't taught about it. Most people in the US weren't.

There's a reason I don't wear a goddamn poppy.

I minored in African-American Lit and have been reading about America’s racist history my whole damn life and there’s always, still, some disgusting moment in our collective past that I’d never heard of.

The way Watchmen intro’d the unknowing to Tulsa…just always adding to the compendium of evil.

Definitely frustrating, but also a reflection of how our education & public memory systems have been designed.
