Here's the family of Sandhills that live on a large sports field adjacent to the lake. All four, Mom (R), Dad (L), and two colts (Center), Then Mom and lastly one of the colts. The kids are almost as big as the parents now.

I have been calling that red patch a crown in the past, but that is technically incorrect. Their crown is the gray feathers atop their head and the red spot is a red skin patch on the forehead.
