But yeah. Being compassionate about your own behaviour, while understanding why it had negative effects on others, seems so crucial.

I had no IDEA how to get my material and emotional needs met in my twenties. I was a mess, and people fear that.

It's really important to say, for instance "The way I tried to get my needs met provoked anger and frustration" rather than "No wonder they hated me, I was such a fucking scab".

I had so much pain to blot out and smoked up any distraction I could get my hands on.

I remember my friends really hating me for that. I'm trying not to judge them now (two have passed, one by his own hand) but damn if cruelty to each other isn't built into white Australian culture.

It reminds me of how important it is to use neutral language to describe our own behaviours.

Ruminating on the disaster area of my twenties, and how my unmet needs - which must have been incredibly frustrating, I accept - provoked spite and contempt among my friends.

We were all poor, of course.

I would frequently ask for cigarettes that I couldn't afford to buy.

Ever since Al Franken rightfully resigned from his post, there's been a vindictive streak in liberal circles that insists we shouldn't have to hold ourselves to standards if the Republicans aren't going to do the same.
