Banter timeline: Starmer resigns not just as PM but as an MP, Andy Burnham gets selected for *that* byelection, stands in the leadership election, comes fourth.

Wrt Bryan Kohberger thing btw you better believe that a lot of the media was outraged at his plea deal because they thought they were going to be raking in money with their coverage of a televised trial.
The bright colours and the look on the lady's face like she's about to read out a "fun" Buzzfeed listicle. While behind her are the faces of missing people whose families are still looking for them. Their disappearances made into entertainment.

Just epitomises everything wrong with "True Crime."

By the way, if I should ever fall victim to a serial killer or disppear mysteriously you do NOT have my permission to turn what happens to me into an "entertaining" Netflix documentary.

I mean, I'm probably not going to run into a serial killer, but I still want to make that clear lol.

I keep coming back to this. Never felt hatred like it for an ad before.
I got viscerally angry at this YouTube ad the other day

It was bizarre to hear the gametes bubble up from the depths of TERF Island’s brain worms and wind up in a U.S. EO. That language has been around for years but I hadn’t heard it prominently on the U.S. right until recently
I see people say "it's coming from the Christian right" but that's only half the story. It is also coming from secular, liberal and leftist "gender criticals", especially in the UK - and their success in the UK has spurred on anti-trans movements elsewhere, including the USA.
She might be the one who brought it to the White House but the teleological gamete definition of sex comes right out of “gender-critical” feminism, especially from UK “GCs.”

Ikr? Mail Man is not a name which is befitting someone who is organised around the production of large immobile gametes. Reeks of gender.
wait a goddamn minute

the woman who is driving this administration's transphobic policy game is named mail man

Traced it back to George Williamson's "Sex And Evolution" (1975), via Ruth Hubbard's essay "Have Only Men Evolved?"

Williamson links this to different "reproductive strategies", in other words sociobiological justification for a patriarchal model of gender roles. Plus ça change...

Mandelson resigning is very 2000s. Between that and the government's complicity in war crimes, Starmer is bringing us the full New Labour experience.

This has been an incredible thread tbh, succeeded far beyond my wildest expectations.

The first reply to call out the fact that I am English and that is the reason why I won't be voting Democrat came in literally 1 minute after the initial post.

AND YET.
Anyway in case there was any doubt, I will never vote Democrat.

The most important advice I have for people considering carrying anything for self defense in the UK is that carrying anything with the intent to use it for harm, even in self defense, is itself illegal and so you shouldn't discuss it on social media in case someone goes searching after the fact.

My go-to on this in the UK is this 2018 study where 1/3rd of employers admitted they would break the law and refuse to hire someone on the grounds they are transgender, and that was before things reached a real fever pitch in the last few years. www.crosslandsolicitors.com/site/hr-hub/...

I also hate how it as squeezed out good crime fiction. These documentaries are so easy and cheap to make that we don't get many shows like The Wire anymore, just formulaic copaganda as per Law & Order, and in the UK trash like Sherlock.
I've really come to despise "true crime" as a genre.

I'm familiar with this theory.

The NHS hospital administration who were in her corner and came under fire for refusing to listen to the concerns of consultants... the administration framed her and, by extention, uhh, themselves.

Doesn't quite add up, in my opinion.

What I'd be open to is hearing new evidence. That's what the judiciary would be open to as well, since the lack of any new evidence is why they haven't granted a new trial. But they don't have any!

Not that there aren't any good true crime docs ofc. It's just that for every Paradise Lost or Serial Season 1 there are a thousand that are basically just this.
I listened to a "Solved Cold Cases" podcast a while back, and they were basically all "Steve was killed. Police thought the killer was probably Bob b/c he's the only plausible suspect, but forensic tech wasn't good enough to prove it yet. 15 years later tech was good enough and showed it was Bob."
