Newspapers.com has uploaded a bunch of newspapers this year. If this happened last year, my list of 1K+ high school underground newspapers and 500+ high school independent organizations would be much longer. I found a bunch of new names since the book went into publication.

I keep finding incredible stories I can’t fit into the book, High School Students Unite! Here’s one: in 1973, students at Central High in Cheyenne, WY formed a group after 10 classmates were suspended for handing out a leaflet urging students to attend an MLK memorial. #skystorians

I’ve gotta get this book by @aaronfountainjr.bsky.social (go IU!) about what he found in FOIA requests: white parents alerting the COINTELPRO-era FBI to their kids’ “radicalism.” Their language that their kids got sucked in by outside agitators and were too young to understand remains today.

As more newspapers get digitized, I keep uncovering new high school independent student groups and underground papers, often from places I never saw in the archives while writing the book. Bangor, ME; Bismarck, ND; Topeka, KS… it really drives home how truly national this high school activism was.

Andrew's book on the politics of smallpox in the American Revolution is such a great book and his argument below about people articulating inoculation as a *right* of the people is so important! @bachynski.bsky.social

Two panels commemorating the contribution of Black American soldiers towards the liberation of the Netherlands in World War Two have been quietly removed from a cemetery in Limburg. It follows a complaint by right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

I was literally working with Lex on a forthcoming article in Teen Vogue. I had no idea this had just occurred.
Lex McMenamin, one of many valuable Teen Vogue reporters laid off today, said, "Majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. There are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue." 💔

As @sifill.bsky.social noted, this is NOT a business decision. Goal is to suppress knowledge, analysis. 🧵

In "High School Students Unite!" I discussed the long-forgotten San Francisco's Mission High School strike. The incidents led radical documentary film makers to make this video, High School Rising - 1969 - CharlieDeanArchives / Archival Footage
