Car free in #yeg
How can this possibly be true? The only bike infrastructure Edmonton built in those years was whatever neighbourhood renewal was building, and we rarely build high comfort level infrastructure.
A study out of SFU shows something we already knew: Vancouver's bike infrastructure has stagnated. #bikeyvr

#yeg now has $62M/yr of new revenue from mature neighbourhood infill compared to 2016. That's over $330M added to city coffers

All using the same roads, pipes, preserving farmland and enabling neighbourhood-level shops.

All of this is thanks to Edmonton's pioneering approach to urban redevelopment

i think my academic employer’s refusal to provide indoor bike parking (e.g. in its very spacious underground parking garage) is premised on the claim that such storage poses a “fire hazard.”

i just want to remind everyone that not all cyclists ride ebikes.

Edmonton punches above it's weight with transit, and we are nowhere close to realizing the untapped potential. Same with cycling.
In a kind of "love letter to #canada," @nerd4cities includes 6 Canadian cities in the top 8 transit systems of North America.

I learned today from a driver that if someone else is breaking a law, it's ok to break that law.

#themoreyouknow

3 drivers, managing to block a bike lane, while parking on the sidewalk, and also angle parking in a parallel only zone.

All bike infrastructure is car infrastructure.

If we built cities and places for people, instead of cars driving by, we wouldn't need expensive infrastructure to protect us.
“What sometimes seems like millions being spent on bikes is actually millions being spent to avoid impacts to vehicle traffic.”

Even though I am still learning about bike infrastructure, I say a version of this line to people who complain to me about bike lanes.

In a 15km ride today, I saw at least 8 vehicles parked blatantly illegally, completely/partially blocking crosswalks, or on the sidewalk.

On Feb 13, we're teaming up with councillors & advocacy groups to encourage people to try biking to work (and celebrate the people doing it)!

Join us for treats, and if you've never biked in the winter before, this is your nudge to give it a try! 🚲❄️

I don't think people appreciate enough the fact that, at a time where global warming was approaching an inflection point yet renewable energy was finally becoming economically viable, we decided to squander that opportunity because literal death cultists decided we needed Infinite Bullshit Machines.

Leading American companies — including Palantir, Deloitte, and private prison giant GEO Group — raked in over $22B from ICE and CBP contracts last year.

Do not forget who is profiting from cruelty and human suffering.

With everything going on in the world, let's not forget this this isn't about the political parties. The Republicans, the Democrats, the Liberal party, the Conservatives, and even the NDP, they're all neoliberal. That's the real cause of everything.

Stop voting for neoliberals.

More public money going to subsidize driving. Something that's already about 90% subsidized.

If we really care about climate change, we need to stop saving the automobile industry and start implementing climate-friendly policies.

So, the Heritage Valley Library is about to open. The City is also building an LRT nearby. Are they close, in a way that allows people outside of cars to easily use LRT to access the library?

It's not terrible, but driving is by far the easiest and that's why we are failing at City Plan goals.

Wîhkwêntôwin already works. The final neighbourhood renewal design doesn’t reflect that. You can help fix that.

Read about how the current draft steps back on safety, year-round bike infrastructure, and people-first design — and how it can still be fixed.

Institutional permission to fail is how Edmonton’s Complete Streets standards quietly allow unsafe designs to be called “compliant.”

Painted lanes. Shared streets. Sidewalk-like paths. Safety traded away in the name of flexibility and legal defensibility.

That’s not Vision Zero.
