Since 2024, Edmonton has legalized building more affordable housing options, like row homes, in central neighbourhoods.

While only a small number, less than 1%, of properties have been redeveloped, it makes all the difference for the lives of the local workers who get to live there.

I'm live from my Edmonton neighbourhood where a single eightplex being built has resulted in the "complete destruction of the neighbourhood".

I am sheltering in the rubble of my single family home, which didn't survive the impact of a rental apartment for the middle class.

I like living in a place where renting is common and normalized and homeownership culture is not as strong.

Specifically, I dislike the common idea that you’re a “failure” if you rent (or you’re being “exploited”). And the culture that glorifies rising house prices.

Housing unaffordability is a policy choice. When rent goes up, look to your municipal government that has made it too hard to build new homes where people want to live.
One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back.

Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance.

Be a housing fan.

The point of urban planning should be to plan, not just run public consultations indefinitely.
This item was basically a request to endorse the directions in the report and move forward to the next stage of engagement. It looks like Committee will defer at Councillor Cheng's request. This would be a deferral on the proposed community engagement until more community engagement is done.
If you're interested in making this spine a little chunkier, the latest on the North York Secondary Plan should be at Planning and Housing Committee on December 3rd. No new details available yet but opposition from the low-rise Neighbourhood is expected.

One thing I'd always like to point out when NIMBYs say some application isn't producing enough green space: we have the room for lots of green space. We just spend it on parking.

Also important to note that one of the most anti-transit and anti-infill councillors lost her reelection
Edmonton's infill election is over, and Edmontonians overwhelmingly voted for a pro-infill council. The predicted backlash never came.

Now, it's time to build. And what better place to start than near our LRT stations.

Great work by @growtogetheryeg.bsky.social on making the case for more housing options in Edmonton. Unfortunate that Toronto is still the go-to counterexample for unaffordability getting out of control.

Edmonton defies pundit "wisdom" that infill isn't a vote winner. The lesson? Make a plan with clear, fair rules and most people will understand the vision for the future. Carving out wealthy or vocal neighbourhoods undermines the vision and the process.

Is infill a top election issue in 2025? According to polls, no.

Only 14% of people rank infill as a top 3 issue, ranking below garbage collection.

While infill may not be a top issue, it helps solve the actual top issues.

✔️ Lowering taxes
✔️ Reducing poverty
✔️ Better services
✔️ Safer streets
✔️ Climate action

Bike lanes didn’t make the list—but they’re part of the solution to ALL of these. Read our new blog to learn how!

A new poll shows that infill is NOT a top election issue for Edmontonians. How can that be, when it seems to be in the news, all the time? 🧵

I'm extremely disappointed in this "balanced" plan. This policy would kill a ton of housing where it is needed most, with nothing concrete to make up for it.

Strap in folks, because I have a lot of thoughts that have been brewing over the last few weeks🧵

It’s no secret: The housing crisis is real.

We must build more homes to stay ahead, ensuring affordability and housing options instead of growth in new areas that will drive up costs.

There’s a forty unit building going up on 91 street just north of Whyte. It includes two commercial spaces.

I’m personally hoping for a café/ice cream shop, and a bookstore!

It's also what enables kids from all socio-economic backgrounds to attend one of the city's most sought-after high schools.

If it wasn't for Queen Alex's apartments, Strathcona High School would be attended almost exclusively by the city's wealthiest people.
In Queen Alexandra, midblock apartment buildings have stood beside bungalows for decades. It's what makes this neighbourhood walkable and vibrant, but also quiet and shaded by mature street trees.

Wait I just learnt where these two are, and in 3 years I am definitely considering checking if a unit is available in one of these

-Close to LRT
-right beside a grocery store
-easy access to the River Valley

I can see why there is so much demand to live there

NEW BLOG POST: Edmonton Needs More Than Tax Incentives for Transit-Oriented Development.

@michaeljanz.bsky.social has proposed tax incentives for building density around LRT. But, we also need to legalize building in the first place.

But they're segmented in the exact opposite way as NIMBYs claim: New supply *barely lowers luxury rents*, it mostly *tanks rents in the old buildings* it draws tenants from
