Update: the bugs got loose. They’re everywhere. Crawling. Squirming. Scurrying. It’s a whole thing.

Thank you Eryn and #HorrorWritersChat people.

This time of year makes us grateful for a warm place to sleep and turns our thoughts to those who don’t.

This charity anthology (which includes my story “A Tall, Thin House”) benefits women and children experiencing homelessness.

I'm currently working on a Lovecraftian short story collection, set in America in various time periods, with an entity called the Sleepwalker involved in each.

Here's my Cthulhu Mythos noir short story to tide you over till it's out:

Her palms sweated as she clicked send. She closed her eyes. There, done.

She looked back at the screen, and her heart clambered into her throat. Already a reply?

She swallowed heavily as she opened the message.

"Thank you for reaching out. I am away on vacation ..."

When the acetaminophen could no longer silence his molar, Jake turned to cloves. When the cloves stopped working, he called the dentist.

The dentist stared into his mouth for five full minutes and went into the hallway.

“…call someone…” Jake heard.

It made the news.

Becky pulled the sheet over her face as the thing in the closet repeatedly thumped against the door. Minutes ticked by, the sound growing louder and louder. Her parents wouldn’t answer her cries that there was a monster in her closet.

Becky finally crept toward the closet...

It’s ANY scene that requires me to describe a house, a landscape or the weather, which gets at my fear that my bare bones writing style is not suited to horror

#HorrorWritersChat
Q3:
Here at #HorrorWritersChat we really do like to peel back those insecurities and fears and expose them to the light. You can do this.
Which scene do you keep putting off? And why?
February 11, 2026 at 7:31 PM
#HorrorWritersChat if you read my answer to Q2, you might have picked up on the phrase “half written.” There’s a reason for that 😂
Besides the anxiety of describing the event, I think it’s anxiety of making it sound good too. Like, can I actually pull this off or is my anxiety holding me back?

#HorrorWritersChat Q2:

I'm not sure how uncomfortable I am with it, maybe just painfully aware, but the idea of forbidden knowledge really resonates with me. I really identify with characters who tear their lives, minds, and even souls apart, just because they need to know.
February 11, 2026 at 7:21 PM
I definitely have some anxiety about cars and driving (so many things could go wrong). So I guess naturally that has become the general premise of several shorts I’ve written or half written haha. That “mechanical carnage” is something I fear.

Q2.
This question is not about the comfortable places that we go with horror. But the uncomfortable ones. The ones that turn us inside out even as we write them. The ones that make us wonder who we are, at the end. #HorrorWritersChat

I'm Amber from central Maine. I write all kinds of horror, most with cults or ghosts. I think part of why I write what I do is because horror challenges the notion that the world is a safe and welcoming place. Which is just a reflection of reality as an autistic person.

Hi there #HorrorWritersChat! I’m A.C. and I write a wide variety of horror. I love it all so much, I try not to limit myself to one subgenre or anything. I think that’s one of the things that draws me to horror: the creativity and flexibility of horror. Also the escapism.
