New preprint from member of FORRT - How to Develop and Use Open Educational Resources 📣

In this chapter, we position Open Educational Resources (OERs) as not only cost-saving tools but as instruments of epistemic justice and inclusion.

Teaching a fun science & critical thinking course this semester.

Trying out THAMES as a handy mnemonic for what to look for in evaluating science papers & such (obvs not all are as relevant for every paper)...
THAMES mnemonic for reading science:

T
Theory
•What BIG IDEA is the focus?

H
Hypothesis
•What SMALLER IDEA is actually getting tested?

A
Assumptions &
Alternatives
•What needs to be true to connect T:H?
•What else could explain results/predictions?

M
Methods:
Measures & Manipulations
•Were methodological tools validated?
•Evidence that we’re measuring/manip what’s claimed?

E
Evidence &
Ethics
•Are claims calibrated to EVIDENCE? Is EVIDENCE appropriate?
•ETHICALLY sound in practice/intent/implication/application?

S
Sampling
Statistical Model
•Who was studied? Who are claims about?
•Do stat results match verbal ideas?

Finally watching the first episode of #CelebrityTraitors.

First observation is that it’s interesting to watch celebs explicitly seeing it as a game, whereas I think many people in the normal version see it as an opportunity to win money to change their life and so don’t just see it as ‘a fun game’

I couldn't watch the first episode of Celebrity Traitors last night so I'm very much looking forward to catching up this evening!

So intrigued to see how it goes when people already have an idea of each other's characters. How will that play into the way people play the game? SO EXCITED.

Oh dang. This is an excellent analogy.

The mystery of medical diagnosis!
Anyone: Why are there suddenly so many AHDH diagnoses?
Dr. Jen: Same reason there are suddenly more stars after we built telescopes.

A lot of us find ADHD TikToks relatable. However, some popular content doesn't quite reflect what we know about ADHD.

A recent study explores how this sort of incorrect information about the condition is received by viewers: www.bps.org.uk/research-dig...

This looks so interesting! This will be great to discuss in my neuroethics lecture when we consider the ethics of research and the importance of ensuring that participants understand what it is they're signing up to when they agree to participate in an imaging study 😊

Can I send love and luck instead? 💜

I really appreciate your encouragement 😊

But I’ve got some writing ideas about online research and the benefits of embedding this more into research methods curriculums, and I think that crosses over both my research and teaching backgrounds, so it may be a good starting place.
ajohnstone.bsky.social
For me part of it stems from the fact that my writing used to be from a researcher perspective. I’m now at a teaching focused place with no research time and I feel like I’ve never learnt to write from a T&S perspective. I’m finding my academic identity again, and this impacts my writing confidence.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to this Jim! I agree that it feels like something is missing without writing, so I think writing without worrying about whether it’s for other eyes is probably a good start. I’d encourage you to give it another go too!

This is a superb article - agree that everyone working in HE should read it.

I would assume that replications would be included, but I can also see why the opposite could be argued.

Science/research chums. I am working on a project about replication and am very keen on your feedback. 1/3

I like this idea, and it links in with @aidanhorner.bsky.social’s suggestion point about how it doesn’t need to be published. Maybe I need to focus on writing for me and then seeing what happens afterwards, rather than writing with a wider goal first.

I'm not quite sure when I let that voice have more weight rather than just ignoring it and writing anyway. I miss the boldness I had when I was a PhD student!
ajohnstone.bsky.social
I've been wanting to write again recently but I keep getting that little self-doubt voice that says 'you've got nothing interesting to say' and 'nobody will be interested anyway'.

Maybe it's time to just push through the discomfort and get writing again regardless of the little self-doubt voice!
