I always assumed sans space meant the sentence was trailing off, at least in creative writing. (Like a character reconsiders an action and mutters, "On second thought...")

I think a big jump in my own personal maturity was realizing what a crutch sarcasm was. I didn't need a postgraduate degree to figure it out, I just had to read enough bad essays like this one.
