When I first cooked up the idea of Archie and Jim as crime scene cleaners, partly based on all the blood-scrubbing they do in S2, I described it as Aletea bait because she truly was my perfect person for this idea 😌

This is the last full chapter of this one before the epilogue, and it's SUCH a satisfying and exciting resolution to this mystery 👀 Jim finally gets their answers, and Archie gets to show her smartness, too 👀
But when they reached the door, Jim went to turn the handle, then froze. “What is it?” They pushed the door open slowly, and Archie realized - they hadn’t unlocked it. They hadn't even thought about their key, in their rush to get inside. “Did you…?” Archie began quietly, but Jim shook their head. Archie could see herself leaving a door unlocked. She’d been scattered enough when getting ready for this date that she could have pictured herself making any number of mistakes on her way out. But Jim wasn’t like her. Maybe they weren’t exactly as calm and collected as she’d first thought, but she couldn’t see them leaving their front door unlocked for anyone to stroll through. Archie glanced back out at the street behind them. Were any of the cars new, since they’d left? She’d been so distracted on her way here that she hadn’t noticed the cars parked out in the street. But maybe they had all been here. Maybe someone had been sitting out in a car, watching and waiting for Jim to leave.

Aletea has written THE most perfect Archie in this story and this run of childhood stories made me laugh a heap, and then promptly slapped me soon after (/pos) as we learned more about all the things she's been burying under them 😭 There are some major healing steps in this chapter and it's lovely ❤️
“I wanted to be a snake oil salesman when I was a kid,” she blurted out. Jim stopped and stared at her. “A snake oil-” “I thought it meant selling oil to snakes, to keep their scales shiny. Must have heard the word somewhere.” Archie shrugged. “I was five. Pretty sure I’d only seen snakes in cartoons.” Jim’s lips started twitching and some of that tension in their face eased. “Then when I was six, my class went to the zoo and I lost my tiny fucking mind over the snake enclosure. Decided to become a zookeeper.” A smile broke out on their face. “And then when I was seven, I decided that I wanted to train snakes to act in movies. But that only lasted until another kid told me the snakes were always the bad guys, because fuck that.” “And when you were eight?” “An astronaut.” “¿En serio?” “Yeah. But that only lasted until I learned there were no snakes in space.” Jim laughed and went back to cooking, and Archie felt herself relax. This was fine. Everything was exactly the same as it had been just a few days ago. Nothing had to change. And maybe by talking, Jim just meant that they wanted to relax a little before they dove back into murder; Archie could handle that. “What kicked off the whole snake thing?” Archie shrugged. “Had a stuffed one. That’s all it took, I guess.”

Jim narrowed their eyes at her. “Did Olu tell you?” Oluwande knew? And he’d let her just waltz right in? “I didn’t even meet him until a few minutes ago! How much time do you think he had?” What was Jim picturing? Oluwande passing her in the doorway with a jaunty wave and a thought you might like to know, Jim killed a guy! Cheers! Or maybe he wasn’t the kind of person to say cheers. Archie didn’t fucking know, she didn’t know the guy. Maybe he’d say toodles instead. “Then how do you know anything?” Archie’s face burned hot, and she looked away from them. “So uh, in my defense, I wasn’t trying to find it. It just sort of happened.” Her eyes landed on the cutting board. It occured to Archie now that they were in the kitchen, with a very sharp looking knife resting on the counter not far away, and Jim was looking pretty upset. And Jim had stabbed a guy to death. This might not be the smartest time to confess. “Find what, Archie?”

Morning bump for the latest chapter of our crime scene cleaners! Archie's discovering new things about herself with every passing moment :P
“In here,” Jim called out again, and Archie followed their voice to the door on the other side of the living room, and went into the kitchen. It was a small space, with a table shoved against a far wall, a few chairs in front of it and some things scattered across it. There was a narrow counter, cluttered with appliances. It made Archie relax even more than the living room had; this was a kitchen that got used. It was comfortable. And then she saw Jim with a knife in their hands and her brain stuttered to a halt. One part of her brain shouted oh shit they’re good with that and started to panic about what it might mean if Jim was good with knives. The other part of her brain was like oh shit they’re so fucking hot. Archie wasn’t sure what it meant that both thoughts hit her simultaneously.

We've got Archie and Ed besties, with a fantastic vibe and a fun backstory! Bitchy Stede appearance, too! Lovely Oluwande arrives! And Archie continues to draw some really questionable conclusions, while getting incredibly flustered (/hot) about Jim + knives...
No wonder she hadn’t heard from Ed in weeks; he’d gotten laser focused on this new guy and forgotten everything else. She’d seen him do it before, although usually it was over things and not people - he’d pick up some new hobby and try to turn himself into an expert on it. He’d decide he was going to be a professional woodworker or a mechanic or a fisherman. And then a week later he’d have gotten bored, and all his shiny new gear would get shoved in a corner to be forgotten. Archie wondered how long before this Stede guy got shoved in a corner to be forgotten. “He’s fucking fascinating,” Ed said cheerfully. “We’re having a blast. He’s teaching me all about this shit.” It was a strangely domestic scene in her head: Ed baking cupcakes with his new guy and a little girl. Probably all wearing frilly aprons and covered in frosting, in one of those picture-perfect kitchens like she’d been cleaning up today. It sat weirdly in her head. It didn’t fit. Ed was like Archie, which was why they got along so well - neither of them were into that domestic sort of shit. Things like families and cupcakes weren’t for them. But the Ed in her imagination looked happy. And the real Ed sounded happy.
