NEW: Extraordinary scenes in Amsterdam this afternoon (Sunday, Oct 5).

An estimated 250,000 bring the city to a standstill; people all wearing red to show solidarity with Palestine 🇵🇸

The naturalist Jane Goodall died today at 91. Hope, she argued, is not merely “passive wishful thinking” but a “crucial survival trait.” Revisit a conversation with Goodall, from 2021: nyer.cm/F55JtsS

Interesting to see Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Yalçın Rafiyev saying that 🇦🇿 are acting as mediators between Türkiye and Australia re. #CoP31 hosting rights, including in NY at the #UNGA.

Suggests there might be a 'result in the near future'.. 👀

For Australia’s national climate plans to be meaningful, they need to include an orderly phase-out of its fossil fuel exports, writes Melbourne Climate Futures Research Fellow Arthur Wyns.

The sitting President of the United States is in the United Nations complaining that his company did not get the contract to renovate the United States. And above all he is lying about employment, prices, inflation. He is just rambling. This is embarrassing.

I spoke with a brave Australian, Dr Bianca Webb-Pullman, who is sailing to Gaza aboard the Family Boat alongside Greta Thunberg.

Following the drone strike on her boat, she has a message for her local member, Josh Burns. Why not help him hear it?

Better together.

Congratulations to H.E. Annalena Baerbock of 🇩🇪 for her election as President of the General Assembly for the #UNGA80.

🇨🇭looks forward to working with you during the upcoming session to achieve a stronger UN.

So, something similar could absolutely still happen, but the whole UN GA isn't going to relocate for the opening tomorrow..
alexeit.bsky.social
Btw @theguardian.com article isn't fake news but moving the whole GA is being conflated with proposing a one-day conference in Geneva.

In 1988 UNGA43 started in NYC, before a vote on Dec 2 (Res.43/49) saw it moved to Geneva for two days to "consider the question of Palestine".

The vote? 154-2 ..

🚨 some (sadly) fake news going around that 🇺🇳 #UNGA80 has been moved to Geneva from NYC after the US refused 🇵🇸 visas.

1) No way vote would be 152-2 for/against, esp. a day before the meeting is in session (w/ leaders itineraries etc. locked in) &

2) No way* to vote without the GA being in session!

It's a historic day in Victoria:

Victoria is today set to become the first state or territory in Australia to introduce a treaty to its parliament.

The treaty promises to "reckon with the past" & empower Victoria's First Peoples.

In April, the AAUP & our Harvard chapter sued the Trump admin for demanding that Harvard censor speech & restructure core operations or else face $8.7 billion in funding cuts.

We hope this decision clarifies to Harvard’s administration that bargaining w/ tyrannical authoritarians is unacceptable.

Somewhere in this Australian university, some well-paid HR people (and consultants, there's always consultants) thought that it was good idea to tell staff worried they might be made redundant that they should hand-wash their good undies to cope with the stress. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08...

The race to host COP31 is between two fossil fuel economies or “petrostates” — Türkiye being Europe’s largest coal-fired electricity producer, and Australia being the world’s second-largest fossil fuel exporter and one of the highest per-capita greenhouse gas emitters. satpa.pe/Ggvw1Ud
Australia’s fight to host COP31
