particularly significant because this specific painting (vanitas of mary magdalene ) is shown in ariels cave in the little mermaid

whats a fire and why does it whats the word??? BURNNNN

another part of the vanitas tradition is that jewelry/ accoutrements of vanity are literally cast aside (the person shown is often codified as mary magdalene who forsook worldly vanity in order to devote herself fully to spirituality (in one view of the lore )

Raphael’s Villa Farnesina, peaches nestled alongside phallic gourds, their ripeness hinting at carnal indulgence. The peach’s cleft also evoked the female form, a metaphor later echoed in the emoji’s modern use for buttocks."

"The Peach: Virtue and Vice

Peaches symbolized duality: their velvety skin and succulent flesh represented virtue, but when bruised or half-eaten, they signaled moral decay. In Giovanni da Udine’s garlands for

as you can see this still life features her infamous bread (eucharist etc) which she mentioned that she scored very carefully (to let the steam out but also since im deep into christian iconography here (shout out to my undergrad degree)

vanitas is kind of painting that is meant to make the viewer reflect on the transience of life and the inevitiability of death
Vanitas[a] is a genre of memento mori symbolizing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, and thus the vanity of ambition and all worldly desires. The paintings involved still life imagery of transitory items. The genre began in the 16th century and continued into the 17th century. Vanitas art is a type of allegorical art representing a higher ideal. It was a sub-genre of painting heavily employed by Dutch painters during the Baroque period (c.1585–1730).[1] Spanish painters working at the end of the Spanish Golden Age also created vanitas paintings.

The emphasis on perfume with all of this Elizabeth Taylor talk, and also with the sourdough and baking of it all, is so interesting to me in that scent and taste are the two senses of Taylor‘s audience that she cannot penetrate with her art without being there in the room with them
