A new article of mine is out now in VAN Magazine! It's about BBC Radio 3 Unwind, ambient music, and the strange ideas imposed on it from the outside by both the wellness industry and the reactionaries of the classical music world.
Lastly, Tim Lutton makes a case for ambient music; tracking the insidious ways Wellness Culture™ and algorithmic music discovery have appropriated the genre for ✨healing✨, and arguing for its capacity to hold tension and offer alternative modes of listening: van-magazine.com/mag/unwind-a...
Unwind, Unwound
Taken to orchestral concerts as a child, I was restless. The complexity and vast architectures of a typical Romantic symphony made me think of the music as some fractal maze, wholly illegible in its e...

And I dream of another
Soul dressed in different clothes:
It burns and runs across
From timidity to hope,
With fire that leaves the earth,
Like spirit without a shadow,
Leaving a bunch of lilac
On the table for remembrance.
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

Awful. Solidarity with all those affected.

The Budget did absolutely fuck all for the arts and I fear we'll see more stories like this over the coming months.
Bosses at the Royal Shakespeare Company are proposing to cut its number of employees by 11% and reduce the pay for some of those who remain.

rounded out my Arvo Pärt concerts this year with a 12 Ensemble concert of his works last night at LSO St Lukes.

Highlights included a fantastic new commission by Jasmine Morris and also the GBSR Duo percussionist catching a falling tubular bell before it hit the floor in the middle of a piece.

So the actual bar being discussed for juryless trials seems to be anything where the sentence is less than 5 years.

Anything less than 5 years would not require a jury and could be decided by a judge in a closed room.

Worth noting that 3 years is the top number for activists generally...
