I agree with Samin Nosrat that the Thanksgiving meal is generally pretty bland. BUT, I will also defend the need for at least one bland comfort foods in every cuisine. Nearly everywhere I've traveled there has been a deeply beloved bland thing that nobody is allowed to criticize.

I’m curious about this argument. Not allowing trucks on 580 diverted them to surface streets. Delivery trucks have a job to do – they’re gonna drive no matter what, it’s just a question of where.

Great energy at the #NWSL championship game tonight. Sitting in the middle of Gotham and Washington fans and, in classic NWSL fashion, they’re getting along like old friends.

“At that point, my head popped off.” - Oski
“I must’ve been 18 beers deep at that point. I was in big trouble,” the voice on the other end of the line says. “But if I hadn’t lost my head, that dude would’ve been in seriously bad shape.”

The phases of an English muffin:
1. Not quite toasted
2. Not quite toasted
3. Not quite toasted
4. Not quite toasted
5. Burnt to to a crisp

I prefer a stage 4 English muffin.

The story that got killed was for a podcast and I would LOVE to do more deep-dive food history stories in that medium or for magazines—just putting that out there for any editors or producers who might possibly want to chat.

Apologies to the good people of Ecclefechan, Scotland, but I can’t say the word Ecclefechan without fighting to hold back a wisecrack. By the by, that was one good Ecclefechan tart.

Today is a day that will go down in the annals of sandwich history
Big day at U.S. District Court in D.C. where Sean Dunn, the D.C. Sandwich Guy, is on trial for misdemeanor assault of a federal officer.

Border Patrol agent Gregory Lairmore is on the stand narrating surveillance video of the sammie toss.

'Now he’s struck me with the sandwich,' Lairmore says.

This is quite cool - finding lichens using drones, which tell you where dinosaur bones are.
Remote sensing of lichens with drones for detecting dinosaur bones
Brian Pickles and colleagues show that exposed dinosaur bones can be remote sensed with drones by virtue of colored lichens growing on them.
