started noticing it here. And specifically the thing where the quotation mark is separated from the word it's attached to. My suspicion has been that a lot of journos are using it to double-check tweets. And Swedes still have the wrong form. The rise in two places at once is a bit coincidental. 3:3

Last year, they suddenly started using smart quotes. And that was at the same time ChatGPT started putting them out by default. But ChatGPT uses “” instead of ””. So all of a sudden, all my Swedish students started using American smart quotes. Around that same time—and this isn't scientific—I 2:3

Noted. It seems new to me, though. I noticed because of my students, actually. In Swedish, the quotation marks that are closing quotes ” are used both to open and close. That's what Word autocorrects to. In the past, students documents always had " which indicated they were copying and pasting. 1:3

Yeah, it sucks. And especially when you're teaching students stuff that's necessary and helpful but where the utility doesn't seem obvious today, it can be rough. They just want to scrape by and they really don't care about doing more than that.

I'm noting an awful lot of Bluesky posts with split quotes, that is to say, where the opening quotation mark is on one line, but the opening word is on another line. And that's a good sign that someone is copying and pasting from ChatGPT.

Are people generating tweets? Or are they proofing them?

Leo questioned a world where the wealth of the elite grows
"exponentially" while many "millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings." He also criticized "ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation,"
with false promises "that a free-market economy will automatically solve the problem of poverty."

Leo described a "new tyranny," which shuns any kind of oversight and where the economy is structured "in such a way that sacrifices are demanded of the masses in order to serve the needs of the powerful." The poor, he wrote, are only allowed "drops that trickle down."

The pope openly challenged "prosperity theology" and called Christians to the practice of giving charity. "It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility," he wrote.

Popular movements that challenge "the empire of money," invite people to take on the cause to combat poverty alongside the poor, instead of on their behalf, and "make history," the pope said. It our duty, Leo said, to "make their voices heard, albeit in different ways, in order to point out and denounce such structural issues, even at the cost of appearing foolish or naïve."

Yeah no, even if you're pissed about getting called out on it, stfu about it. I empathize, ofc. You get 10 or 15 people coming at you every day for something you don't feel like you deserve then I'm assuming the statements aren't being written in a state of perfect calm. But c'mon. Don't step in it.

Yeah, it isn't good. I feel for them, though. It seems fucked up and I know there's a lot of things that have to line up for them to even realize what's going on. And then add to it the visa stuff and it gets so complex.

I dunno, man. Go read the statement and see what you think. But they were pretty clear that they felt like shit got dropped on them after it was feasible to change their plans. Sometimes I feel like the internet assumes that bands know when we know, but they really really don't in my experience.
