Another recent release I failed to mention. This was a VERY fun project (working with Václav Luks is always a huge pleasure - as a former horn player he really understands and appreciates what we have to contribute!).
Here's a snippet of Moscheles's Introduction et rondeau écossais, Op.63 which I chose to play on this Webb/Halstead natural horn - this instrument is part of the Webb Collection which is held at the @rcsofficial.bsky.social in Glasgow and ...
The reason for playing it on a two valve horn is that this solo appears in François-Auguste Gaevert's Cours Méthodique d’orchestration (1890) explicitly as an example of solo writing for “cor chromatique” rather than natural horn.
This two valve horn by R.J.Ward & Sons of Liverpool dates from around 1860s. The valves are a little sluggish but could easily be made faster with a bit of tlc and a load of valve oil.
Another horn from the magnificent @rcsofficial.bsky.social collection. Again, a Scottish inspired choice of music (a bit from the slow movement of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 "Scottish" - and there is a reason to play it on an early valve horn!).
(Concert photos by Caroline Doutre from Festival de Pâques, Aix en Provence).
I completely failed to post anything when this recording came out earlier in the year but given that it's just been awarded "Recording of the Year" at the Gramophone Awards I thought worth celebrating the work of marvellous team of musicians involved in this @ensemblepygmalion.bsky.social project.
Featuring an all-star cast of international ARCO soloists and recorded at Monash University on a 2023 national tour, this recording by an all-female-led orchestra will continue to raise women composers and Australian performers to international heights. Help ARCO raise the $10,000 needed to launch!
ARCO's 5th album, to be released in early 2026, features Beethoven's beautiful Septet and the incredible Nonet of Louise Farrenc.
A shout out about a funding campaign close to my heart that is happening imminently.

The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra (aka ARCO) is joining in the first AusArt Day on 23 October (i.e. TOMORROW!!!!) with a campaign to support an exciting new album.
I don't know much about this #HiddenHorn - spotted alongside some other brass instruments in the bottom right hand corner of this painting in the Dom Museum, Salzburg. Any one able to help?
Some of the gems from the @rcsofficial.bsky.social collection which I recently got to play! L to R we've got  a French trompe de chasse, an English hunting horn, a Webb/Halstead 'French' model natural horn, a 2 valve Ward & Sons horn, a Wolf & Figg sauterelle horn and a 2 valve Adolphe Sax horn.
More about this in the coming days but there's a new catalogue out! Prof Arnold Myers has produced the most opulent of catalogues documenting the instruments in the @rcsofficial.bsky.social - I got to play some of the instruments as part of the recent launch.
Horn player added for scale! This shows just how wide the loops of the Carlin and Haltenhof horns are. Huge thanks to both Mark de Merlier for letting me have a go as well as everyone behind the smashing @cydonia_barocca festival that brought us all together.
Another smashing instrument belonging to  Mark de Merlier. This is an original Haltenhof horn from 1773 - my choice of music is, admittedly, a little anachronistic but, given the shape of the instrument hand technique feels very unlikely on such a horn!
What an utter pleasure! I’ve been a big fan of Los Pitutos for ages (fellow horn player and just epic person Matías Piñeira is in it, hence me discovering it)… so when the penny dropped and I realised that the lovely tenor, Álvaro Zambrano, whom I was accompanying is ALSO in the band 🤩🤩🤩
More video snippets of horns I've recently had the pleasure of trying out - this is an original 18th century horn by Carlin of Paris which belongs to a very dear colleague and collector, the splendid horn player Mark de Merlier. I was very honoured to have a bit of a play on it!
What a lovely group! Here's the smashing team of brass and timpani from the IBO Masterworks project last week. LR: Darren Moore, Pamela Stainer, Rosie Toll, Anneke Scott and Hannah Miller.
Coming to RTE Lyric FM soon!
More #HiddenHornPlayer Angels spotted in the shops in Salzburg. I'm trying to work out if the one with the silver horn is going for a top A, F sharp or middle B flat? 📯🤔
One of my favourite #HiddenHorns in Salzburg - located on the Getreidegasse
They make up part of a ceramic bas-relief by Max van der Linden and given by the Belgian royal family to the Irish president Éamon de Valera who had it placed on display at the Academy. #hiddenhornplayers #hiddenhorn
