Just had a lovely day with @Devinemusicman plotting nice things for 2026 and beyond!

Last bit (I think!) from the "views from my music stand" (or views up my nostrils!) from the recent Solomon's Knot "Bach's Horn" disc. Here's a bit of Diana's aria "Jagen ist die Lust der Götter" from Bach's Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd. Cantata BWV 208

A final bit of "Monday Mozart" - here's some of the last movement of Mozart's Concerto in E flat for horn (K447) from my performance with @IrishBaroque Orchestra (dir. @PeterWhelanPP) last October in Kilkenny.

I cut my teeth as a school kid in Brum singing for Jeff Skidmore so it's always a treat to return to work for him!

A couple of nice shots from the Ex Cathedra concert last week taken by the multitalented Melissa Brown - the Concert Producer for @excathedrachoir.bsky.social as well as a number of other things including host of "Bold as Brass" podcast.

I shared this a couple of years ago when we were rehearsing for the concert but in light of the release of the live recording of the Solomon's Knot "Bach's Horns" disc I thought it worth sharing again! My colleague Anna Drysdale and myself in full flow!

A little bit more "Monday Mozart" - here's the opening of the second movement of Mozart's Concerto in E flat for horn (K447) with Irish Baroque Orchestra (dir. Peter Whelan) from our performance last October in Kilkenny.

I had huge fun chatting to the knowledgable Dr Angela K Winter as part of her "Feature Interview" for the December issue of the International Horn Society's "Horn and More" e-newsletter.

Another recording out very recently is this horn encrusted disc with Solomon's Knot. I think this is the first time a photo of mine has ended up as cover art! (And HUGE praise to the painter of my bell - Isabel Osselaere).

A little bit more "Monday Mozart" - here's the cadenza (fashioned by my colleague Dr Robert Percival) from my performance of Mozart's Concerto in E flat for horn (K447) with Irish Baroque Orchestra (dir. Peter Whelan) last October in Kilkenny.

After a final with orchestra with performances of works by Weber and Richard Strauss we awarded 1st prize to Andrea Mancini, 2nd prize to Antoine Jeannot, and 3rd prize to Daniel Loipold. I look forward to discovering how all the contestants develop in the coming years!

I was running around a bit at the time, but here are some nice memories from earlier in the month. It was a great privilege to be part of the jury again for the Città di Porcia horn competition.

My friend Tim Dyess spotted these #hiddenhorn / #hiddenhornplayers in a detail of this collage in an exhibition of Robert Doisneau's photography at the Musee Maillot in Paris. Individually this photo is entitled "Monsieur Rochard, professeur de cor" (1949),

Recovering from another exhilarating Pygmalion tour - huge thanks to these three (Mark Gebhart, Emile Carlioz and Antoine Morisot) for a fabulous Brahms fest! (And thanks to Philippe Genestier for his great photos!).

These just came up at auction at DVC Auctions in Belgium, and, no! I didn't bid! But I do think they are charming. They're described as a pair of early 19th century. Empire period candelabra in partly gilded bronze, each with a Cupid with horn.

I recently had the chance to take a trip to Venice. It was the most superb day of walking around all the back streets and such gorgeous weather. I was on the hunt for Triton, the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, who is often depicted blowing his conch shell horn. And I wasn't disappointed!

I think there are some mornings that I could do with this particular #HiddenHorn! Spotted by William Berndt, I'm loving @@messengercoffee's logo!

#HiddenHornPlayer spotted in Pordonone (in the "BEFED Brew Pub Mestre") where I've spent the last week as a member of the jury for the 35th Concorso Internazionale "Città di Porcia" Horn Competition.

"Sounding Brass. Brasswind Instruments And How They Work" by Murray Campbell, Arnold Myers and Joël Gilbert. Available from Springer Books.
November 7, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Prof. Arnold Myers has been very busy of late - here's ANOTHER recent publication (in addition to the @RCSofficial instrument catalogue). STRONG recommendation as there's lots of fascinating details about how brass instruments actually work in this new book

This one is just out (and just before @ensemblepygmalion.bsky.social commence our next tour of Brahms!).  Photos by Mathilde Assier and Fred Mortagne from the 2024 tour when this CD was recorded.

More CD releases to celebrate!
November 5, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Another recent release I failed to mention. This was a VERY fun project (working with Václav Luks is always a huge pleasure - as a former horn player he really understands and appreciates what we have to contribute!).

Here's a snippet of Moscheles's Introduction et rondeau écossais, Op.63 which I chose to play on this Webb/Halstead natural horn - this instrument is part of the Webb Collection which is held at the @rcsofficial.bsky.social in Glasgow and ...

Another horn from the magnificent @rcsofficial.bsky.social collection. Again, a Scottish inspired choice of music (a bit from the slow movement of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 "Scottish" - and there is a reason to play it on an early valve horn!).
