The next day I went to the temple to check on Satsuki and tell Ryan what I learned that night. She was calmer now and had entered a comatose state. “What did you do?” he asked, a mix of concerned and relieved. “I didn’t really do anything, she chose to take refuge. Smart. She’s playing the long game.” Ryan bent down to undo the bindings that held his mom. She didn’t quite look calm, more like paralysed. Like she was frozen somehow. “It doesn’t make any goddamn sense.” Ryan shook his head. “I’ve encountered my fair share of demons before, but nothing like this.” “You and your mom were doing a séance?” “Yeah.” “How was it different from any other séance?” “It wasn’t—at first. Everything was normal, she got in contact with the spirit, but we realised too late that it wasn’t actually a spirit. We have a system put up for these sorts of things. She checked the energies in the room, I put a barrier up—just in case— and we were both wearing protective amulets. It doesn’t make any sense!” he raised his voice at the end which took us both by surprise. He lowered his head. “Sorry.” “It’s okay.” I thought about putting my hand on his shoulder or something, but decided against it. “I get you’re upset.” “Do you have anything to go on?” I focused my gaze on Satsuki, peering into her aura. “Kinda? I don’t want to speak prematurely.” “Anything is better than nothing. I know how these things work; how quickly things can change, how a condition can appear to be one thing only to turn out to be something else entirely. Give it to me straight.” “Alright, she’s not possessed.” “That’s… good?” “Not really.” “I’m not following.” “Your mom got in contact with something bad, but not a demon. Most likely she caught a glimpse of something she shouldn’t have. Her spirit dipped into another reality and she saw something that drove her insane.” “Do you have experience with these things?” “Yes.” “Then I’m in good hands. I was lucky to find you.” “Luck had nothing to do with it.” “That’s true, thank you. You’re welcome to stay for as long as it takes.” “Don’t thank me yet. You know I can’t guarantee anything, right?” “I know my mother. If it’s something she can get out of she will.”
