This is specific to inspiring trust in a newsroom, but the findings are applicable to universities, associations, govt depts, politicians...anyone who represents a "legacy institution" in which public trust (and subscriptions, and attention) continues to decline

I didn't know that tsunami warnings could last for so many hours but this thread is helpful and useful to understand what's expected to happen in north state
Latest update: after the earthquake in Russia, we have been able to track tsunami waves across the ocean, so the National weather service feels pretty confident in their assessment. It is currently low tide in Crescent City, and the first waves are anticipated to reach the shore around 11:50.

Law of Definite Proportions:

I know the original post meant urban coffee shops and bookstores but it also applies to all the best local fish stores in random suburban strip malls
If you do not actually spend money at the cute local businesses you love, those businesses will go away.
I'm gradually becoming pro-urban decadence. Shop at overprices boutiques! Drink overpriced downtown cocktails! These are solid ways to spend money compared to the alternatives

When I was a kid, my parents quietly pointed out that Adam West was sitting at the table next to us. "Who's he?" I asked, and they said "Batman." I was incredibly confused and disappointed to see that Batman was about 60 years old and not wearing the Batman costume.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

This when writing about the state budget
"Never underestimate your audience's intelligence, but never overestimate their vocabulary"

I cannot remember where I heard that, but it has been hard-wired in my brain ever since. In my experience, overly-technical vocabulary is a barrier to engaging others, even when they're otherwise interested

A good lesson for bill introductions too #caleg
Years ago I wrote what I considered a clever science story & it came back from my editor with two words: "so what?"

It infuriated me then, but I think about that all the time. Communicate why a result matters. Why someone devoted their life to finding out. So many amazing stories emerge that way.
