In truth, it's actually more sophisticated to try and figure out what exactly it is you like about the thing and say that, and it's even more of a compliment. "I like this!" is great, but "I like this, the colors are so vibrant!" is better
I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

The newspaper comic strip Krazy Kat, created by George Herriman, premiered on October 28, 1913. The characters had previously appeared as a side strip to The Dingbat Family. Krazy Kat ran until Herriman’s death in 1944.
