Super weird juxtaposition to see this sign in opposition to new bike/walk improvements on 40th st in Emeryville, then hear a stranger tell me they’re worried about getting hit

Short ride home w/ my kid tonight but at an intersection I saw two sets of headlights side by side in the distance. I heard engine roar and told my kid to get to the side. She rode up onto the sidewalk, I went to the curb. Driver sped thru in the wrong lane and blew the stop sign. Sigh. We’re fine

our crossing guards do mission impossible and I am so thankful for all of them, but JFC the fact that we need "Guards" to simply ensure drivers don't run over school children?
This is what is so twisted about our auto obsessed culture that we don't even see how we've completely normalized this.

🔥"Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers."🔥
One more thing. When I wrote about this study showing one-third of Americans don't drive, people were messaging me saying this cannot be true for LA.

In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!
Highly recommend diving into NRDC's study on car access, which @keawilson.bsky.social wrote about here: usa.streetsblog.org/2025/10/02/report-16-million-have-no-car-access-at-all

Where Nadir was killed, 14% of LA households are car-free. But the infrastructure does not match that reality

I’ve been wanting to go back and re-listen to my audio recording of a 2023 Vision Zero Cities Conference panel and pull out anything else that was interesting.

I finally got around to doing that. And turns out, there was a lot more worth sharing.

Huge shout out to the Alameda Water Shuttle crew for lending me a patch kit do I could fix a flat tire, while on a boat.

I got a flat in the rain. Riding with occasional pumping stops was too slow and I didn’t make it in time.

On my way home a kid in a car yelled “Bike Bus!” to me. I guess they saw my flag? I don’t know if they go to our school or not, but of the things that someone might yell at you from a car, this is one of the best.

This is absolutely devastating. The only trauma-free way out of traffic crashes is re-engineering our streets to be safe like so many other countries have already figured out.
Today Virginia resident Sophia Maltas was sentenced to 45 days in jail for hitting and killing 24-year-old Nina Larson as she was crossing Columbia Road NW in a crosswalk in November 2021. The sentencing hearing was emotionally wrenching and difficult.

At a red light, a driver sped through then cut off two lanes of car traffic at the next light to take a freeway ramp. I guess I got distracted. Next I heard “Bicyclist! Get out of the way!” The light had turned green and another driver was trying to turn right.

Looking at a city through private windows feels a little more like watching it on TV than actually being there

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social on making public transit accessible: "I think the way that you move around the city, it influences the way in which you see the city. Too often if you're riding around only in a car with tinted windows, the only New Yorker you might see is a reflection of yourself."

Mere months ago, New York’s mayoral front-runner was polling right next to “Someone Else.” He spoke to WIRED about building a social media machine, Big Tech capitulation, and learning from Eric Adams.

I’ve been sitting outside of a bike boulevard for a while today. I hear people chatting riding side by side and the quiet sound of freewheels and ebike motors, and the occasional revving car engine. It’s a nice street to sit at and listen.
