How small can a computer get? 🤔 Maddison Coke @manchester.ac.uk is using single atoms to build the next generation of super-powerful computers - but the cooling system is bigger than a room! ❄️

Anyone in science education – this is an interesting article highlighting the importance of teaching physics in a way that connects to more real-world applications and a long overdue need for an overhaul in the curriculum

After a week of ~illness 🤒🤧 I've done a LOT of scrolling. To reinvigorate my brains and introduce myself to this app, I'm going to post 7 pieces of both past & recent (mostly journalistic) writing that I've loved

Starter packs are genius, but I was surprised there wasn't a list of them for people to find.

So I built it:
blueskydirectory.com/starter-pack...

The website monitors the packs being shared and adds the ones it finds to the database.

Missed your stater pack? Message me and I'll get it added.

Someone called this mass exodus from Twitter ‘the fall of the Broman Empire’ and I died laughing. 💀

Watched the new Netflix documentary on how consumerism greed is destroying our health and planet 😭

I despise fast fashion and how ‘nothing lasts as long as they used to’. It’s all by design! It’s the developing countries who suffer as a result (e.g your recycled shoes ending up on a beach in Ghana)

If you're a science writer from a minoritised group, I cannot recommend this scheme enough! I've met the most amazing group writers and had networking opportunities with science communicators. Great for if you're working on a book proposal, blog, article or any other science writing project ✍️
ScienceWrite, a UK scheme for aspiring STEM writers from minoritised backgrounds, is open for 2025 applications!

The 3rd year @romatheengineer.bsky.social & I are running this, with support from @royalsociety.bsky.social & I am SO EXCITED

Deadline 3rd Jan #SciComm 🧪

Bit surreal to be back in the old lecture theatre where I slowly died doing a physics degree about a decade ago.

Except this time, it was to watch Nobel prize winner Professor Kostya Novoselov talk about graphene, which put Manchester’s sustainable materials expertise on the map 😄⚛️

Fantastic talk about why we need more women in science and the barriers facing them by @athenedonald.bsky.social at the Manchester Lit and Phil last night 🙌🏽

Don’t be a bystander! We all have biases and this is an issue that everyone has a responsibility to help fix and make science more inclusive 💪🏽
