Once reliant on expensive fossil fuel imports, Uruguay has gone from blackouts & power cuts to energy sovereignty in under 10 years - with a stable mix of wind, solar, hydroelectric, & bioenergy.

Going for Green: Uruguay’s Renewable Energy Revolution
With no fossil fuel reserves to rely on and domestic demand rising, the country had to get creative—or go broke just trying to keep the lights on. Here’s how they did it.

The great derangement syndrome. As the world blows past the 1.5 degree red line Trump and Carney talk about reviving Keystone XL.
It won't lower tariffs on wood, furniture, steel, auto.
But it will be a massive carbon bomb to a struggling planet.
My latest.

A little wooden lug-rigged sailboat navigates between rocky outcrops on Lake Towada. The rocks are covered with trees rusting red, yellow, and orange with the season. Beyond, on the far side of the lake, low hills are covered in yellowing foliage. The surface of the lake is calm, reflecting the boat and the rocks; above, a few puffy clouds hug the horizon as they cross the bright blue sky.

It's 2025, and here's where we're at: #Ubisoft is afraid to make a Civil War-era video game where you'd play as a former slave fighting enemies including the Ku Klux Klan, for fear of racist right-wing dipshittery.

A bright autumn day on a farm in Ibaraki Prefecture. In the foreground, a pair of figures in broad straw hats stoop and work at some unseen task; nearby, harvested sheaves of rice are hung up on simple wooden racks to dry. Beyond, the farm house and buildings are tucked in beneath tall trees full of leaves rusting red with the season. Above, tattered white clouds slide across a bright blue sky.

Carney's no dictator. He works for us. He was hired to do a job, based on commitments he made to us. Now, this worker is doing the opposite of what he was hired to do, over and over again. Like any employer, it's our responsibility to get him back on track before the situation becomes unsalvageable.

The oil fields are making record profits, and that money is being siphoned out of Alberta & Canada at an accelerating rate. AB's oil industry scored $250 bln in 2022, while slashing re-investment to 1/3 of 2014 levels. They know the end is coming, and want to leave us holding the bag. No thanks.

If you've read Carney's book "Value(s)", you'll know he's been advocating for a proactive role for governments in the transition away from fossil fuels - incentives, taxes, building charging networks etc - for a long time. It's only since the election that he's tossed his principles out the window.

1.) We already have a better vision in renewables; 2.) a majority of people want to see action on climate, and 3.) it is essential that we call out politicians when they break their promises. Public pressure on Carney has already proven effective; see how quickly he re-instated WAGE, for instance.

Title: Signal (1962)

Artist: Kiyoshi Saito

Railway tracks depicted as slim white lines intersect and weave amongst each other across dirty gray earth. In the foreground, a signal light is showing us a steady red. Beyond, overlapping utility poles and industrial gridwork structures screen the shadowy shapes of blocky city buildings. Everything is still: there are no trains on the tracks, no life in the image, no lights in the distant buildings. Above, the sky is dingy and dark.
