It took a highly sophisticated Jacquard weave to create the incredibly detailed oranges that form the fabric of of this early 1890s dress. You can almost smell the citrusy peel. There so many details to observe here, the pattern matching, the cuff trim, the drama! #V&A #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

You all probably know that the halos of saints viewed from behind do look like slices of lemon, right? This is how "Paradise" looks according to the book of hours from Duke of Berry, by the way. #bookhistory

Storytelling with an #earlymodern book:

➡️ printed on paper in 1640
➡️ bound in a recycled medieval parchment page (likely in the 17th century)
➡️ had contact with water while being stored (stains!)
➡️ party been eaten by book worms (my guess: 18th century)
➡️ digitized in the 3rd millennium
tunnels and small holes in a paper page and the parchment binding. These tunnels are caused by insect larvae - "book worms". the printed title page of the book from 1640: VD17 384:717724N (copy from UB Augsburg: 02/XIII.8.4.702angeb.14). the parchment binding of the book: a medieval page

Someone found the exact point when the bunny numbers jumped ahead by 100 a year ago…

I don’t think I’ll correct the order at this point (messes up my bookkeeping) but that means that THIS autumnal bunny is actually number 3000!

I've been working on an essay about The Struggles of TTRPG Outreach and Fandom but I think this tumblr post just captured the whole sentiment im like 100 words.
Fact: Apart from pure recognition factor, one of the major reasons your fanart gets more eyes on it than your OCd is because people are perverts for narrative context, and your OCs don't have any.

Corollary: you don't actually need to write a whole-ass graphic novel to achieve that narrative context. You do need to know what your OC's story is, but once you do, you can literally just draw contextless snapshots from that story that raise more questions than they answer and people will fill in the blanks.

I spent the day looking at applications for licenses to deal second hand goods, which were required in Boston in 1839, and was struck by how many were on blue paper. Made from coarse rags dyed with indigo, they form a sort of class-based material vernacular. No rich person used paper this color 🗃️

"the Bad Faith Threshold" is a great coinage.

The first wave of comments on a post, from those who do actually follow you, is usually interesting or fun or both.

But the later waves are of scolds, humourless reply-guys, "sorry to be pedantics", "whatabouts", and "why are you insulting".

Ah, I see this post has crossed the Bad Faith Threshold: that indefinable moment on social media when people stop behaving as if you’re a normal human person who, say, loves your child and is making a mildly humorous observation, and start responding with wild criticisms and imagined slights.

Yesterday my eleven-year-old daughter claimed that Taylor Swift had embraced a range of genres which included punk. The retribution was swift and included considerable mockery and a lesson on punk which probably took longer than she would have liked.
