sales of internal-combustion engine collapsing in China, down by half since 2017. EVs have taken over

And, China's car exports are soaring.

US automakers getting completely left behind as they abandon EVs. Losing market share worldwide

I'm finding I have to disengage from the news more often now, it's just too scary/depressing.

Had a lovely time last night watching a bit of #railnatter with @garethdennis.uk - which may also have been a bit depressing, but much less scary.

This might have been a good idea in the 1960s, but it's not a good idea any more.

Oddly enough the government went further in their draft legislation than I expected - they at least mentioned finding alternative funding models for rolling stock.

Let's remind ourselves of what was promised in 2018 for £70bn of new east-west high speed lines across the north, thanks to far superior reporting to what we're seeing today: www.bbc.com/news/uk-engl...

It's not.

Fascinating approach to growth they've got!
January 14, 2026 at 7:23 AM
For clarity, this government has so far:
- cancelled HS2 north of Birmingham (previous government hadn't actually done that formally)
- cancelled electrification of the Midland Main Line
- cancelled West Yorkshire mass transit
- cancelled the trans-Pennine high speed line
January 14, 2026 at 7:23 AM
Today's announcement is the opposite of what it says it is. It's the formal cancellation of the high speed line across the Pennines.

What's left - additional TRU scope - is a good idea but should be delivered as a business as usual enhancement in 2027, not some far off fanfaron.

Read through this for mention of "the public" "people" and think: does this seem to refer to anyone except the tiny, incestuous group of hacks who cluster around Westminster?

Every once in a while, a celebrity, like Chris O' Dowd or Richard Ayoade or Jimmy Carr* will inch their heads above the parapet and support Graham Linehan.

Why isn't it the job of a journalist to go back to those people and ask them to comment on his supporting ICE shooting a woman in the head?
Graham Linehan claims he detonated his career, his family, his entire life, to protect women. He often asks people to "apologise to their daughters" if they disagree with him on trans rights.

And yet, when someone's daughter is executed by ICE, he shares Right-Wing propaganda that she deserved it.

Protest against complicity in genocide in Keir Starmer's and Labour's UK now carries an extra-judicial death sentence. All the Palestine Action prisoners are asking is for a judicial process worthy of a normal democracy. This will never be forgiven or forgotten.
