I think it would be really funny if ppl/orgs who invest in currency all dumped the american dollar and invested in like literally every other currency so america was just surrounded by bad exchange rates (aka how the rest of us experience the world economy).

Reverse Tomboy has sold 500 copies in under 3 months without any advertising budget or press-coverage, which tbh I think is pretty damn good for something self published. It has a 4.48 on Goodreads, and the reviews it has gotten are all absolutely lovely.

I don’t have an answer here, other than that I think it’s time for me to re-read Eros and Society (shoutout Marcuse). I think the best thing I can do is just to never hide from my own will and to try to be around others who are also committed to living life in honest conversation with themselves

But I do think it probably only works for so long, and I think it works only if you deny yourself the knowledge of what you want, or try and suppress it. It only works if you buy into the same game of reinforcing the nuclear family as our parents did, but this time self consciously, with a wink

For so many of my generation it seems that the answer has been to “do it anyways, but try to make it bearable, more liberal, less traditional, but to still do it” and often the answer to why seems to be “I was afraid and did not know what else to do”. And honestly I can’t hate on that, if it works 🤷‍♀️

But then what do we do? If nuclear marriage is just means by which you deny yourself the romantic life you’re afraid that you still want? If motherhood is a means that society tells you you no longer matter except insofar as what you can offer to your kid (ego death lol)? What do we do!?

All this work the nuclear family was doing, at insisting that we must settle down and that if we still felt kinda insane and unhinged after settling down, if we still desired outside romance or to make “dumb decisions” something was uniquely maladjusted with us…that’s gone now. Or at least going…

As we watch our politicians seemingly display that old age does not make one wise, (but instead often gullible, cruel, greedy, unwilling to care about the long term, and most notably intellectually/mentally weaker) it is harder to believe that aging is a process of maturing and growing wise

It is harder and harder to pretend that middle aged people are less gullible or emotionally volatile or hateful or prone to acting/speaking without thinking when you can see them doing it constantly on facebook. It isn’t just your family that is weird or your boss that sucks, it’s obviously everyone

I think this facade/myth of adult maturity (which has some truth insofar as some of us learn from some of our mistakes/experiences) is becoming harder to maintain in an era when seeing your extended social web (often older ppl) rot their brains on AI slop and tiktok has become the norm.

It ensures that the reality, that “proper” adults are either semi-openly messy and messes or deeply trying to find their internal uncertainty behind the family roles they inhabit, never sees the light of day except to those closest to them. The nuclear family creates a myth of stability and maturity

Like yes the nuclear family reinforced patriarchy and heterosexuality and capitalism. All of that is true. But it also makes it appear that only young people (who are not yet married) are messy, unstable, uncertain, and making odd choices. It tells you that that ends once you “grow up & settle down”

One of the key purposes of the nuclear heterosexual family is to hide us from the deeply imperfect, anxious, and foundering truth of adult humans. By presenting the nuclear family as a norm you hide all the messy drama within small units, and convince everyone only their family is weird

The lesson is not that trans liberation is a matter of linguistic “inclusion,” as even trans philosophers now seem to think. It’s how little you need to have such that the word ‘daughter’ stands out as the greatest gift from cis parents.

My fav scene from Reverse Tomboy: Not its insightful analysis of (hetero)sexuality as inseparable from (normative) gender, or the retroactive meaning-making we do for early exp., or even the malleability of embodiment desires. Just a girl over the moon about the smallest thing—being called daughter.

“Thank you.” It was a simple thing to say, but so is ‘daughter’. Besides, Naomi was grinning.
