A message from my dear friend Tasneem in Gaza: "The bombing and targeting don't stop, my friend. A terrifying explosion happened right next to us today."

Like most of the displaced families, they rely on our donations to survive. Please give to Tasneem and others. ❤️

And then there’s a world here where movies like Sinners and One Battle After Another don’t even hit our biggest screens, or they do only in major cities on the coasts. Further instilling that the movies are no longer for everyone now, just those in the right place with money.

I have zero idea what the answer is, it feels hopeless. If you still have an indie theater, support it. If you can buy physical media from boutiques, that helps too. But the idea of a smaller movie, made now, by people outside of the studio system, getting play feels impossible.

It’s increasingly clear that we live in a world by and for billionaires now, but the movies have always been a stridently democratic art form. The spaces where indie films thrive need to be protected and we are losing sight of that in an ever growing sea of corporate content.

It’s hard to not see the Netflix/WB news as a sort of doomsday scenario. The constant mergers and large scale absorptions of brands might be good for business, in theory, but they are bad for art; they are bad for creators; they are bad for preservation. Which makes it bad for us.

by banning the game Valve and Epic have made the whole thing a lightning rod issue and given the game a ton of visibility. it's not big enough to affect them right now but it feels like in the long run it's opened a door they may really regret opening

the HORSES affair is a startlingly low bar to cross to see if people actually care about protecting games from censorship of upsetting themes because it's far tamer and has way more moral clarity than a lot of stuff that doesn't get banned. but it's also very clarifying to see who can't cross it
