Roald Hoffman is a scientist I deeply admire. A post on LinkedIn took me back to my days in grad school when someone shared this commentary by him on immigration and emigration of scientists and people. I encourage you to read it. Perhaps even more profound today.

Here Ardem talks about being a scientist, the nature of science research and the pursuit of it, importantly from the perspective of an immigrant scientist in the US.

As scientists, we need to do better in communicating with everyone about what we do and why it is important . Please listen.
Scripps Research Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist @ardemp.bskyverified.social was featured on @scifri.bsky.social, where he reflected on the biology of touch, his early career path in science, and why he believes great scientists are practical dreamers who balance bold ideas with scientific rigor.
Even Nobel Prize Winners Deal With Imposter Syndrome
Neuroscientist Ardem Patapoutian immigrated to the US, found belonging in science, and did groundbreaking work on sense of touch.

This year's Nobel Prize in chemistry made my mind wander back to my days as a graduate student in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Dept. at Harvard and brought back memories of another stalwart in chemistry and Prof. Yaghi's postdoctoral mentor, Prof. Richard Holm.

We didn't treat this shutdown like a vacation. It was an important period to reflect on the needs of people. Food, shelter, and water are necessary components of health, and @27unihted.bsky.social members know that just because you're not on duty, health is always the mission. #NIHStrong #FEDStrong
As many of you know, more than one million federal employees have been furloughed since October 1, 2025. However, we never stop serving the people, near and far. @27unihted.bsky.social has collected 2,000 pounds of food and $20,000 for DC area food banks. #FEDStrong #NIHStrong
