i think the wackiest conspiracy theory i'm inclined to believe is the one about 700 years of european history being entirely fake bc some dipshit monks (intentionally or otherwise) conflated "ab urbe condita" with "anno domini"

sorry to UChicago-post but one must take seriously the idea that Aristotle in 350 B.C. understood the character of the human activity of thinking better than 99.999% of people living today
Don't have anything new to say about AI here. One thing I will say is that higher ed has long been broken. If elites had spent more time thinking through the point of education and how well we really do it than stoking woke panic, maybe we wouldn't be staring at this abyss. nymag.com/intelligence...

that mack thread was surreal. cartoonish even. literally citing examples of ridiculous and destructive overreactions as if those are arguments IN FAVOR of another ridiculous and destructive overreaction

remarkable lack of self-awareness, by so many people

Sensational knee-jerk reactions to misleading media stories does not help the discourse on suicidality. It distracts from it.

This is already a field that suffers from limited resources and attention.

I feel strongly that if you're going to speak out about the current chatbot litigation, at the bare minimum you need to read the filings on the dockets of these cases. Not just the sensational snippets you see in the media. And you need to educate yourself on how to speak about public health issues.

Because they’re not. Anyone with even minimal crisis-response training and familiarity with suicidality understands that psychosis is a complex, multifactorial condition—and that this fixation on chatbots distracts from the far more important work of identifying and addressing its underlying causes.
For all that the media has spent years freaking out about what social media does to our brains, I don’t understand why there appears to be little effort to grapple with the fact that these chatbots are, for some not insignificant portion of the population, literally psychosis machines

as technology advances, it's become clear that the time for enterprises to take quantum cryptography seriously isn't tomorrow — it's today. that's why we're excited to announce a proprietary new technique that is totally unaffected by quantum. we call it ROT-13

no one's happy about the current situation with leopards eating people's faces. that's why we're open-sourcing a full reimplementation of Leopard Corp's proprietary face eating library, in rust

I need an app such that I type in all the different types of alcohol and mixers I have, and it references a common bartending guide, and spits out a list of all the cocktails I can actually make without going to the liquor store.

I have a feeling this might even exist.
