A deadly encounter on the streets of 21st Century Kyoto in the wake of devastation from an earthquake that also unleashed a horde of demons - and magic back into the world.

Hello. For my newsletter, I wrote an essay about the compilation that got me into Japanese new wave. Tokyo Mobile Music is an imperfect package with a spotty history surrounding it, so I went ahead and filled in the gaps and wrote some liner notes for you myself.

Rescue missions are subtly different. With multiple hostages to find, some of whom have useful skills, you can recruit the hostages themselves to help. You also score per hostage freed. cyningstan.itch.io/star-cadre-c... #starcadre #ibmpc #msdos #cga

Absolutely crucial drpg mechanic: the one-way door
February 5, 2026 at 2:16 PM
I still come across a few artifacts of the old drpg now and then, like this switch model. It reminds me of that game and makes me excited to get back to it once this one is done. The theme of that one will be very different but mechanically it will build on what I'm currently making

I think I've implemented all that's needed to build the maps I've drawn so far. I have 6 floors, up to a first boss. Looking forward to building this out and playtesting

I'm continuously glad I decided to pause my bigger drpg project and make this smaller one first so I can get the basics down, because even just the basics are so much effort

Do you ever quickly throw together a placeholder, take one look at it in game and sigh because you realize it's probably going to be final? Just did that with this item pickup thing

When this soundtrack is done I’ll be selling several pieces of hardware that I don’t use. As much as I like hardware, I’m settling into an efficient and satisfying computer-based workflow that doesn’t call for as much gear as I have

Listening to boss battle bgm drafts for the first time in a weeks. The drafts I thought were so-so sound really promising to me now. Looking forward to finalizing them. Overall this soundtrack is going to be very strong imo

John Harris' 80s art for the ZX81 manual in 1981 and the ZX Spectrum Basic Programming book the following year. Bold Brutalism inspired shapes and exotic floating mountain cities. Used these contrasting colour schemes myself recently too. Absolutely iconic.

I've seen lots of interest in switching from windows to linux recently, so fwiw the distribution I've been using for the past few years is KDE Neon. I find its Plasma environment to be stable and customizable without being too complex. It's pretty similar to windows too neon.kde.org
