I am INCREDIBLY excited to introduce Iran+100, a collection of stories from Iranian writers all over the world. It examines what life in Iran might look like in 2053, 100 years after the US-backed coup that overthrew Mosaddegh and led to the Iranian Revolution.

Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

I think part of the reason the reaction to people arguing *for* GenAI use is so aggressive is that not a single one of these arguments bothers to meaningfully engage with the ethical problems these technologies present. And those ethical problems are monumental. They're not minor.

There’s a huge difference between “AI isn’t going anywhere and therefore we should adopt it” and “companies will likely continue to shove AI down our throats for the foreseeable, so we need to build structures to protect our institutions and industries.”

There’s a huge difference between “AI isn’t going anywhere and therefore we should adopt it” and “companies will likely continue to shove AI down our throats for the foreseeable, so we need to build structures to protect our institutions and industries.”
The highlight of my holiday break so far was wandering into a used bookstore and finding a translation of the Shahnameh (the national epic of Iran) published in 1886! The binding is in rough shape (another project for when I finally take up bookbinding), but it otherwise seems to be in good repair.

1) clear rules excluding AI-created content are important to hold the line, especially for publishers who would want nothing more than to toss their editors into the drink.
