I no longer believe that the words illegal/legal, moral/immoral, or ethical/unethical have any meaning in the United States.

Figure from Martin Wolf's article in today's Financial Times, showing that Canada's current effective US tariff rate, at about 7%, is the lowest of all countries shown, although it is more than an order of magnitude higher than at the end of 2024. on.ft.com/4958sbo
Comparison of effective US tariff rates for various countries. The highest rates for October 2025 are those of China (45%), India (36%) and Brazil (29%), while the lowest is Canada at (7%). The world average rate is about 19%.

This is the life-saving work that the Trump Regime is doing its best to destroy.
I have to add: please note that this work is the result of long years of university research, much of it federally funded. And note that the years (decades) of less-successful attempts that have led up to these papers are in the same category: NIH and NCI money are all over this field. This is the very thing that the Trump administration has been working tirelessly to destroy. I am not exaggerating. They have been hitting these funding agencies over and over with layoffs, budget cuts, and whatever obstacles they can dream up, and they are also ripping into the universities where these funds have been granted. The exact phrases that J. D. Vance, Stephen Miller, Russell Vought and their henchmen have used is "universities are the enemy" and federal workers "need to be put into trauma". More specifically, the attitudes of our HHS head (RFK, Jr.) and his own minions toward mRNA research and vaccination are easy to summarize: they hate it and they want it to stop. It seems bizarre and insane and almost impossible to believe, but that is exactly what is happening. Every time you see scientific progress being made from US universities, remember that our elected officials are trying every day to defund it, to cripple it, to kill it outright. They are hitting it again and again in the hopes that it will finally stop moving. Act accordingly.

We shouldn't trade with Russia and should maintain sanctions because Russia is waging an illegal war against Ukraine and engaging in war crimes. India has been involved in extrajudicial killings and called out by Canada and the US, but nothing they've done has risen to the level of Russia's crimes.
berlinskyjohn.bsky.social
Those articles all refer to planning and possibilities. Have you seen evidence than any budget has actually been cut? The budget won't be tabled until November 4.
berlinskyjohn.bsky.social
My opinion of Modi is at least a low as yours, but India is the largest country in the world in terms of population. Does it make sense for Canada not to work with them or instead to alienate them?
berlinskyjohn.bsky.social
My point is that Carney hasn't actually approved any of Alberta's demands. All he's done is listen. So far, no projects have been approved nor have any cuts been made. Pretty much all of the concerns about what will happen are speculative.
berlinskyjohn.bsky.social
I feel that it's premature to judge Carney because so little has happened in any final way, no budget tabled, legislation passed or major projects approved. I also sense that he wants to move toward the centre to draw in more Canadians since having a country of warring factions isn't going to work.

There’s a reason hate mongers and disinformationists like #AndrewLawton are so concerned. They want no consequences for their hate entrepreneurship, disinformation spreading and destabilization efforts against 🇨🇦’s civil society. bsky.app/profile/heat... #cdnpoli

Something else I’d like to add about #AndrewLawton, #PierrePoilievre’s handpicked #CPC candidate in London, On. Lawton’s racist misogynist views, weren’t just evident in many years past (which he blamed on mental illness), Lawton continued to dog whistle to white nationalists, much more recently.

"I think it's wrong to have the highest rate of funding for private schools in a province where we have the lowest rate of funding for public schools," the Calgary teacher said in an interview on Tuesday.
I agree.

If high school chemistry teacher Alicia Taylor gets her wish, Albertans will vote in a referendum on whether to end public funding for independent schools.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

I left X in December 2024 and have not looked back. I think people should be very critical of Canadian decisionmakers who use X, and I would encourage you to leave X and take as many of your large audience as you can with you. The only way to kill it is to stop using it.

The solution is clearly that more resources are required because the available resources are not adequate to deal with the workload.

I was hoping that this 2023 speculation on the impact of the return of Trump would become an historical curiosity in November. Instead, American voters have plunged us all into the post-American era.
