This is part 3 - the 2 other parts cover the 60's & 80's rounds in depth - but '91 was the biggy & it gets the coverage it deserves. Well worth watching all 3.

And no Lib Dem representation despite having more MPs than R*f*rm Ltd (a Nigel Farage owned & operated private company - run by & forvthe benefit of, Nigel Farage).

It's finally here, the 1991 instalment of the ITV Franchise story - It's a long one, but, as someone who lived through & studied this in GCSE Media Studies - as it was happening! It's an absolute belter of a ride.

This morning I turned on my phone only to find that it had changed my user name to Shirley, and when I tried to enter a simple Google query it came out as "Do you like gladiator movies?"

Then I realised it was in Airplane! mode.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

That one of the Geography teachers, Miss P, had appeared in a pornographic magazine doing 'things' with a banana. As a result she was known as Bananawoman & anyone who she heard calling her that got detention....

Fence #26 will be a special on all things print, and in tribute to the storied history of the UK gutter press, our letters page wants your GOSSIP & SCANDAL.

So, we're asking you all: what was the most scandalous (true or false) bit of gossip that dominated your school or neighbourhood growing up?
A photo of assembled paparazzi waiting to snap your shame for the scandal sheets.

It made me chuckle - considering in the first episode he was just credited as 'TV Director'

'Richard Ashcroft is as much the Scott Walker of Britpop as David Baddiel is the Spike Milligan of comedy is the new rock ‘n’ roll. You’d think someone who is a million different people from one day to the next would have more than a couple of ideas'

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

They could, but what is there to gain from it? OFCOM are about as effective as a chocolate fireguard, so I very much doubt they have the fire, spirit or will to shake up UK TV. And in the multichannel, streaming era - would anyone (other than us) notice or care, and would it have an impact on TV?
biggytee.bsky.social
No UK Govt has tinkered with itv/stv since deregulation & the mergers. I would suggest that now they are all established and in role, like C5, (not Public owned/Publis service broadcasters like BBC/C4) they have no need to get involved. There's no IBA anymore, only OffCom. ITV is now set in stone.
biggytee.bsky.social
Of course - STV, I really doubt the Govt wants to dabble north of the border.
biggytee.bsky.social
I suspect that now all the franchises are owned by one company, would suggest that the Govt wouldn't be too bothered about changing the status quo.

We studied it during GCSE Media Studies as it was going on. It was fascinating to watch & see how the Tories wanted Thames out & all the others who were collateral damage, all of which were winners at the previous franchise round!
