I wish academic ML was a bit more skeptical of papers and less skeptical of industry. I get that it sucks to not have visibility on details, but it doesn’t invalidate the results. On the flip side, there are too many papers whose message are parroted despite sketchy experiments.

hating on AI is very popular. It's a reaction to the delusional AI fanatics who think that truth is all hazy and differentiable (it's not, there are discrete true/false things) and claim that any day now it'll solve arbitrarily-hard reasoning tasks. But it's equally delusional to say it's useless.
