Whatever the reason, it is not the imago of the Negro that makes the colon into a fetishist, but her obedience to a phantasm; it is not the phantasm or imago that is traumatic, but the interpellation it later calls forth and that is unconsciously displaced as such. Whether that passion or obedience is moved by love, or compelled by fear, or moved (as is more common) by hatred and fear commingled, Fanon insists that the myth of the Negro necessarily extends to all aspects of life in the colony and that people submit to it whether they choose to or not. Accordingly, we should not immediately infer that Mlle B. is a racial fetishist out of sexual perversity rather than out of cultural obedience. If it is true that the phobic object forms itself out of the stereotype (with the ambiguity that that implies—the stereotype as the material from which desire is built, and the stereotype as the disfiguring of desire by culture), only to find the stereotype returning to haunt this fantasy of the black object at its root—then it is reasonable to suppose that the stereotype, the one that returns to the ego its own murderous-shameful attachment, is in fact standing for a fear of disintegration that is the originary trace of the other within us. And if the contingency and violence of the stereotype is already occupied by the returning violence of the ego, Fanon makes it clear that the ego’s neurosis just is where the stereotype returns—and the stereotype just is the real occupying the ego. The enemy attacking the ego from within and against which it seeks to indemnify itself using phobia is, then, the ego, for whom the contingency and violence of the other is intolerable precisely because it originates in its own fetishistic attachments. We must therefore distinguish the determination of the fetish-as-stereotype from the fantasies that sustain it, which derive pleasure from the mortification so consecrated, but which leave us undisturbed in our everyday relationships, allowing us to explore our relations to feelings of insecurity, but only in the absence of any crisis of self-relation or dissolution. The fetish is our way of enjoying—or consuming—our own acts of sublation. And this concealed unconcealment is both enjoyed and, in the end, necessarily repeated. We are fetishists not in our relation to forms of appearance, but in relation to what is always missing from appearance, which we metaphorically assume to be masked. We act as if this absence is inscribed on the surface of appearance but its meaning lies elsewhere. Racial fetishism, in other words, points to an illusion at work in social reality itself: people are racial fetishists in how they act, and not necessarily in how they think. If the fetish is a defense against uncertainty, a defense crucial to the belief that it is possible to draw a veil over the (misrecognized) implications of castration, this is because psychically it represents a cultural disciplining of (egoic) enjoyment through (racial) splitting and displacement. Politically, fetishism leaves us unfree within our representations, but frees us from the presuppositions and outcomes (the compensations and the punishments) of mutual exposure to ourselves and others.

Yet, at the same time, sexuality can provide tastes of freedom, elements of unalienated life-making. John Rechy provided a sense of this in his 1977 chronicle of the gay erotic underground, The Sexual Outlaw: “In the sex moments pressurized into high intensity by life-crushing strictures challenged, the sexual outlaw experiences to the utmost the rush of soul, blood, cum through every channel of his being to the physical and psychical discharge of the fully awakened, living, defiant body.” The specific masculinity of this sexual underground may tell us something about who is more likely to experience sex as a taste of freedom given dominant power relations of gender and racialization, which tend to undermine the bodily autonomy and sexual agency of women and people who are colonized and racialized.

Às afirmações oficiais do ocupante, aos boletins sensacionalistas do adversário, ele opõe informações oficialmente declaradas pelo comando da revolução. Às vezes, é o militante que põe em circulação o suposto ponto de vista da direção política. Por causa de um silêncio sobre este ou aquele fato que, se prolongado, poderia se revelar angustiante e perigoso para a unidade do povo, toda a nação insere, ao longo da transmissão, fragmentos de sentenças e lhes confere um significado decisivo. Essa Voz, que sentimos presente, cuja realidade podemos adivinhar, comparada com a importância das ondas de interferência emitidas pelas estações inimigas especializadas, ganha cada vez mais peso. É o poder da sabotagem inimiga que acentua a realidade e a intensidade da expressão nacional. Palavra da Argélia em luta e Voz de cada argelino, o caráter quase fantasmático da rádio dos mujahidin confere ao combate sua existência máxima. Nessas condições, afirmar ter ouvido a Voz da Argélia é, em certo sentido, alterar a verdade, mas é acima de tudo uma oportunidade de proclamar a participação secreta na essência da revolução. É fazer uma escolha deliberada, embora não explícita nos primeiros meses, entre a mentira congênita do inimigo e a mentira do próprio colonizado, que de repente adquire uma dimensão de verdade. Essa voz, muitas vezes ausente, fisicamente inaudível, que cada um sente crescer dentro de si, fundada sobre a percepção interior da Pátria, se materializa de forma inegável. Cada argelino, por sua vez, emite e transmite a nova linguagem. A modalidade de existência dessa voz lembra, por várias razões, a da revolução: ela está presente no ar, mas não objetivamente, em pedaços dispersos. O aparelho de rádio é a garantia dessa mentira verdadeira. Todas as noites, das 21 horas até a meia-noite, o argelino se põe à escuta. No final da noite, não ouvindo a Voz, às vezes abandona a agulha sobre uma frequência com interferência ou ruídos de estática e decreta que aí se encontra a voz dos combatentes. Por uma hora, a sala é preenchida pelo ruído lancinante e doloroso de interferência. O argelino, por trás de cada modulação, de cada chiado ativo, decifra não apenas palavras, mas batalhas concretas. A guerra das ondas de rádio, no gourbi, reedita para o cidadão o confronto armado entre o seu povo e o colonialismo. Geralmente, a vitória vai para A Voz da Argélia. Os aparelhos inimigos, uma vez terminada a transmissão, abandonam o trabalho de sabotagem. A música militar da Argélia em guerra que encerra as transmissões pode, então, preencher livremente o peito e a cabeça dos fiéis. Essas poucas notas metálicas, recompensando três horas de esperança diária, desempenharam durante meses um papel fundamental na formação e no fortalecimento da consciência nacional argelina.
