fun fact: 99.99% of the books you hear me raving about on here are from the library to begin with, because there's no way in hell I have the means to buy every one

How to Navigate Burnout When You Can’t Control the Causes
"How do you navigate burnout when the root problems aren’t within your control?" I saw this question in a post in a popular library Facebook group last week and knew immediately I could answer this. First, let’s make sure we’re talking about the same thing. Burnout has entered the popular lexicon and is often used in place of tiredness or exhaustion.

When you sacrifice your trans students to the government, they're gonna keep coming back for more
Well, this is chilling AF.

The Department of Education is suing Penn (in their quest for "combat antisemitism") requesting detailed information about Jewish faculty and staff.

Think Twice Before Giving Surveillance for the Holidays

I spent almost 10 years providing training, outreach, & grants management with NNLM, focused on telling public libraries and the communities they served to use trusted evidence-based health resources from the government, including the CDC, and now they're full of Nazi shit. I can't even.
Earlier this week, a new page titled “Vaccines and Autism” appeared on the CDC website. The agency's employees are not happy about it.

Book bans have never been solely about the books. They're about the systematic silence & erasure of the voices those books represent, & the intentional dismantling & destruction of public goods that serve as institutions of democracy.

It's Not Just Laws About Books Breaking Libraries. It's Also New Tax Reforms.
Two states have passed property tax cuts that are directly impacting public libraries. Expect to see this happen more.

A little round as I work to get back into the habit of writing regularly. I have been busy. I ran for and won a seat on the Board of Directors for the Iowa Library Association. I’ll step into this role in January, which also means I will step down from the Government Access Committee and the Leadership Development Committee.

No family should have to suffer this way. Today, we honor Miles. And we demand better.

Our leaders must stop using hate as a political tactic, especially when children’s lives are on the line. Hate has no place here, but love must. #TransgenderDayofRemembrance

TurboTax actively lobbies congress to make filling taxes more complicated than it needs to be so you’ll pay to use them.
TurboTax is about to be integrated into ChatGPT, where customers will be guided through tasks tied to their tax filings or financial profile by the AI chatbot.

TurboTax owner Intuit is also paying OpenAI more than $100 million a year to power AI agents.
