I've talked about this a few times. I struggle with it in my writing, too.
Audiences want complex, partly sympathetic villains. But the villains of reality are painfully, pathetically simple and cruel. Where am I supposed to find sympathy?

I have been struggling with the concept of evil and villainy, not just in my life but in my writing.
Living now has challenged my empathy, my desire to draw antagonists as complex as their hero counterparts.

I think a lot about the IP plays of 2017, films like “Blade Runner 2049”, “Logan”, “War for the Planet of the Apes”, or “The Last Jedi”, shows like “Twin Peaks: The Return”, “Legion”, Moffat “Doctor Who”, etc.
Projects that trusted their audience to engage with the past, not just jangling keys.
