A lot of classic sci-fi shows dating back to the original Trek and classic BSG were guilty of that too. This is our Shane ep, or a Guns of Navarone ep, or the Magnificent 7 ep. Even Enterprise and Firefly were doing those eps. I miss it to be fair. What would it be now? This is our Inception ep?

I also miss networks doing their takes on successful movies. Men In Black gave us Special Unit 2. Twilight's success saw The Vampire Diaries emerge. Pirates of the Caribbean led to Crossbones.

We should have ABC/NBC/FOX giving us a Barbie knock off starring Vanessa Hudgens.

The book The Haves and Have-Yachts by Evan Osnos touches upon this. The people selling the bunkers were saying if you need a small army to protect you, then you're gonna also have to take with you their families and so on and so on. The familes of your private jet's pilots etc.

Having said that, no one at my school had a clue about Charlie's Angels, but pretty much everyone went to see the film.

Exactly this. When I was growing up, reruns of MASH were popular on a cable channel here in the UK. My mum was watching 2 eps a night (so I did too). No teen today is having to watch MASH.

It's interesting that the filmmakers backing or championing AI (Miller, Blum, Cameron) are those having trouble with ballooning budgets. Or in Blum's case needing to compete with the big spectacle movies but at a fraction of the cost. Creativity and innovation used to be the workaround.
