I’m Dug. Living in Metro Detroit I put in 25 years as a page-builder (graphic designer) until the small paper I worked for closed. Now (mostly) retired I’m returning to my surrealist roots, usually working with traditional pen and pencil drawing & polymer clay sculpture

Here is a sampling of my art
A pen and color pencil drawing of a young woman with an oversized head, her red hair gently moved by the wind stands in a black-hulled small ship (based on a Little Tikes tugboat shaped sandbox), holds onto the white cabin with her left hand. There is nobody at the wheel of the ship. In her right is a white bird house that has a brown leather suitcase handle attached to the green roof. Above her head is a blender, the black electric cord curving around like a halo. And around the blender is a swirling cloud of razor blades. The grey sky is overcast, and there are gentle but pronounced swells in the vibrant blue green water. At the bottom right, just below the green blue waterline a circling shark can be seen. A fairy house made of polymer clay. It appears to be a taller, upside down terra cotta pot with green door trimmed in blue. There is a flat, terracotta awning supported by twigs over the entrance. The 2nd story features half-round green windows, also trimmed in blue. Also visible is a more conventional square green window. Yup! Trimmed in blue! A pen drawing of a rhinoceros with a house-shaped burden on its back. The rhino is mostly grey. The house has the number 20 and letter “w” and a scissor headed bird on the front. It is early Fall in the forest. Around are tall trees in dappled light, possibly oak, some with their lobed leaves still the dark green from hot summer months, and others that have begun to turn to a red, rust, and brown. The underbrush is still green in their shade. A young woman is in the foreground and highlighted with a thin, bright green outline; this is a three-quarters portrait with her head turned to view us directly over her left shoulder. She has longer brown hair, elven ears, a strong jawline, square chin, slightly parted lips, upturned nose, hooded dark eyes, a scar running vertically from the left brow to across her high cheekbone, and thin eyebrows lifted to betray a wariness. So I managed a quick collage using some stuff that's been lying around my desk!
Abstract collage background using odd pieces of torn papers and some floral printed tissue paper. Focal point is a vintage image of a little boy. I added some butterfly wings to him. Embellished the whole thing some teeny tiny gems and a wooden butterfly embellishment.

Die Wickelkinder der Schnecklinge (Gastropoda nanus) sind noch winziger als die adulten Exemplare. Zum Schlafen werden sie in Gruppen im Moos abgelegt. Also Vorsicht beim Spaziergang im Wald!
Vier winzige Babys stecken in verschiedenartigen Türmchenschneckenhäusern, die im Moos liegen. Eines lächelt zufrieden im Schlaf, eines schreit, eines lutscht am Daumen und eines träumt ganz still. Die Szene ist gerahmt mit einem Fries von Schnullern, Rasseln, Milchfläschchen, Strickschuhchen und -mützchen sowie einem Plüschbären.

Heuschnecke (Gastropoda fenum)
Die Heuschnecke ist eine Kreuzung, von der nicht ganz ausgemacht ist, ob es sich dabei um einen Schneck oder um einen Schreck handelt.
Der Rumpf dieses Tierchens besteht aus einer Türmchenschnecke, während Kopf, Beine und Flügel die einer Heuschrecke sind. Es besitzt lange Fühler, die Stengeln und Rispen von einer Art Wiesenschwingel gleichen, und damit auch auf die Welt der Botanik verweisen.
