July morning
soft breezes stir
dancing through window lace

in the back yard a bath
full of noise and fluster
full of birds

midday sun rounds the bend
clears the trees
sears a landing strip
on yellowing grass

the bubbles in her lemonade
begin to self destruct

Long ago
Met far away
On an endless plain
Far away
And Long ago
Sang once, sang again:
‘Long away
And far ago
Are the places
That we’ve been;
Far ago
And long away
And nowhere
In between’

A walk over frosty fields, through sheltered woods to heap up more hay for the old horse. Asleep & swaying on her feet, I woke her gently. Over her shoulder, a young horse undid the front of his rug on the fence & shed it like a cloak, before galloping a victory lap, bucking & farting. We tutted.

I’m moved and enchanted by this poem by Meghan O’Rourke from the latest @newyorker.com which came through the letterbox earlier and which is trying to stop me getting on with my writing. I shouldn’t have opened it!

BETWEEN DRAFTS OF A POEM

At this border
The guards
Are never asleep.
They check your papers
And ask you
To go over the details
Again.

Now the clock, is gainly spinning; but in me, something stands still.

Though each wave, erodes the sandline; the sky above, shines ever blue.

In the earth, ancient diamonds are churning; yet none of them, out-age the soul.

@thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social for this week's #PromptCombo #TakingItUpstairs – from my @salopress.bsky.social book.

Haussmann was the chap who pretty much razed Paris in the 1800s under Napoleon, replacing the medieval street layout with vast boulevards and vistas.
