If anyone's looking for a good book, I just finished Hardy's The Woodlanders and loved it

Lots of great work out there on how students don't learn as well when it's hot out -- but guess what! Teachers don't teach as well, either!

Read on for a great paper on how heat and learning is as much a *labor* question as it is a *kids* question.
Hi! I’m Mary and I’m on the #EconJobMarket this year.

Extreme heat doesn’t just affect students, it affects the people teaching them.

This storm looks so bad. My heart goes out to friends and colleagues in Jamaica right now.
If current forecasts hold, Melissa will be the most powerful hurricane ever to strike Jamaica. Sustained winds at landfall may top 140 mph, along with localized rains of 40"+ and major storm surge. Here's my latest update with @drjeffmasters.bsky.social:

Melissa leaps from tropical storm to Category 4 hurricane in 18 hours » Yale Climate Connections
Catastrophic impacts are becoming increasingly likely for Jamaica, with Melissa expected to crash onshore by early Tuesday.

Our new review paper, "A Guide to Climate Damages," is an attempt at unifying three kinds of papers:

“hot weather lowers corn and soy yields”

with “farmers can alter their crop choice”

and with “there’s a lot of trade in agricultural products”

In his Moving On post, Ari Shapiro talks about keeping the ATC mission posted near his desk.

Here's what I keep posted near my desk.

Thanks, @ari-shapiro.bsky.social, for metaphorically holding my hand every time my research hits a roadblock!

Hey fellow profs, if you don't already, you might consider sending out congratulatory emails to the students who really nailed it. Definitely my favorite part of the end of the semester. The students who were curious, insightful, hardworking - we see you!

In middle school math league, I was asked to calculate the angles of a 7-pointed star.

I calculated the angles for a 7/3 heptagram, but the answer key was for a 7/2 heptagram, and I received no credit.

still bitter
