From @seattletimes.com, “Wilson, with her police security detail now in tow” … anyone know if they’re willing to secure her on buses or requiring a car?

Seattle's Mamdani is winning by an absurdly small margin over our incumbent mayor, who once pulled a gun on a pregnant woman in a parking lot.

Vote in your local elections!

<screams>

At all levels of government and society, if social norms and LAWS are not enforced, our society will fall apart faster than we even see it coming.
Seattle mayor Bruce Harrell was putting out at least a press release daily celebrating all the amazing things the mayor's office was doing right up until, let's see, November 3.

Nothing since then, though. Weird!

What I then find is public employees just <aren’t as good> and can’t manage the consultants they hire. I (unlike some) don’t believe (most) consultants take advantage of this, but the entire unit is far less efficient because the defined leaders are only meh at their jobs.
If you want government to actually function, you can't just assert that people should take like 1/4 pay out of a sense of civic duty. There aren't enough people with that sort of deep conviction & commitment to actually staff government bureaucracies

This feels like how I expect Pierce and Snohomish Counties to vote themselves out of the ST taxation district after THE SPINE is completed.
Dallas Area Rapid Transit just built a transit line extension into Plano that opened just a couple weeks ago. Yesterday, Plano City Council voted 8-0 to allow voters to choose whether or not to leave DART www.keranews.org/news/2025-11...
Plano leaders vote to hold DART withdrawal election next spring
City council members heard hours of public comment Wednesday, most of it in support of DART, before voting to call the election.

Biked through crazy rain to get to the @thewaroncars.bsky.social and @nerd4cities.bsky.social book event at @townhallseattle.bsky.social. First, it was a lovely presentation and they were very sweet with book signing. Two, it felt like ALL the best local urbanism folks were there, which was fun!

Also every millennial just hears reference to Torrance from Bring it On.

Which then leads to brrr! It’s cold in here! There must be so toro(ent)s in the atmosphere! I said brr!! Etc.
The Torrent, if that is the name of the PWHL team, have a real SEO challenge in front of them. Right now a search for Torrent just pulls up filesharing utilities.

I don't hate the name, but it does seem like a bit of an odd choice.

There’s a real great “two birds with one stone” opportunity here, if the Seattle police started enforcing laws that reflect in higher road safety. Trust in police might go up AND traffic safety concerns go down.
Seattle's ‘surprising’ top public-safety concern, according to an annual survey
Seattle University's annual survey on public safety, initiated in 2015, shows how local perceptions of crime, safety and policing have shifted.

A thing that has disappeared, it feels like, is philanthropic movements towards society-building and the arts. Here is a lovely example of someone bucking that trend. Yay for Shari D. Behnke. Seattle arts nonprofit gets record $5 million donation

Seattle bikers… do you have pogie recommendations?

I bought a cheap pair of Amazon a few years back to “try”; love the concept but want warmer bigger ones. My brief research implies many can’t stand up to NW rain.

What do you use / like / recommend?

I have found that since Covid, rule-following is down. I see and get mad about it most when watching drivers ignore speed limits and NTOR signs. Why should this be different?

Sadly this is what our society is based on (following norms). If nothing is enforced and “that guy can do it”, why not you
An interesting investigation in @upshot.nytimes.com today evaluating some of the challenges to improving buses in NYC—whether through speed or fares www.nytimes.com/interactive/... (gift link!)

Interesting tidbit: Bus ridership is basically back to pre-pandemic levels—but fare payment is way down.

Biking Jackson to Rainier Friday, a driver didn’t like the car backup so he pulled right - into the bike lane, and ran down about 4-6 flex posts on his way to whatever right turn he needed. The posts did not rebound, so, guess that’s now on the To Do and Pay For list for @seattledot.bsky.social
MDOT will "apply green paint to help motorists better identify the bike lanes and install flex-post delineators to enhance visibility and separation of the bike lanes...in proximity of the Capital Crescent Trail, a highly used hiker/biker trail that connects people to life’s opportunities."
Today at the Sarah Langenkamp Memorial Enhanced Bike Lanes on River Rd/MD190. These plastic flex posts have been up less than two weeks.

No, we don't want "free" healthcare.

We want universal healthcare paid for by our taxes that covers everyone and leaves no one bankrupted and sick.

This isn’t difficult to comprehend.
