Was lucky enough to capture these photos on the way back from the field last week. A group of ~12 chimpanzees crossing a road inside Cantanhez NP, Guinea-Bissau. This was metres from a village, highlighting how humans and chimpanzees share the land across their range.

🇬🇼 Glad to report another successful fieldwork expedition in the Dulombi National Park working with local guides and the government’s wildlife division IBAP on collecting eDNA samples in our attempts to detect the critically endangered Western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus).
Excited to get started on our second round of fieldwork surveying chimpanzees here in Guinea-Bissau - this time in the remote Boé National Park. Special thank you to the Chimbo Foundation for hosting us at their research camp. @derbyuni.bsky.social #Chimpanzee #Conservation #Fieldwork

Every year around now, I start to see grad students on social media bemoan that they’re going home for the holidays to a family that doesn’t understand their research, or what they do in general, and it breaks my heart. 🧵 🧪 #SciComm

In a devastating blow to wolves and science-based conservation, European Union member states have chosen fear-mongering and anti-wolf rhetoric over facts. Today, members of the Bern Convention voted to downgrade the status of wolves across the EU from "strictly protected" to "protected."
European countries vote to give farmers more freedom to shoot wolves
The decision by Bern Convention members is a major win for the EU and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
